Rockets.com beat writer Damien Pierce opens up his mailbag each week to answer fans' questions.

So ask Pierce anything about the NBA or the Rockets. He’ll come up with an answer or an answer that sounds right. His answers, of course, are entirely his own opinion.

In this week's mailbag, fans want to know how it's possible that Shane Battier has never been a member of the NBA's All-Defensive Team and if the team would consider sending some of its rookies to the NBA Developmental League.

Chat With Houston's Shane Battier

The Rockets completed a trade for Battier on July 12, thus acquiring one of the NBA's best defenders with an excellent shooting touch.

Battier, who was the sixth overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft, joins the Rockets after five seasons in Memphis. He is the Grizzlies' all-time leader in games played (396) and steals (507). He has averaged 10.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game over his career. Last season, he knocked down 48.8 percent of shots, including 39.4 percent of his three-point attempts.

Shane Battier: 코비,티맥,르브론,그리고 멜로 같은 선수들이 가장 막기 어려운 선수들입니다. 이런 선수들은 노련하면서도, 적극적이고 공격적인 선수들이기 때문이죠. 대단히 수비하기가 힘들어요. 그나마 다행인 점은, 티맥을 연습에서만 상대하면 된다는 겁니다.^^

Shane Battier: 듀크 대에 처음 입학했을때 32번,33번,35번은 각각 크리스챤 래트너, 그랜트 힐, 대니 페리의 등번호로 영구결번되어서 체육관 천장에 걸려있었습니다. 그래서 듀크 대를 졸업할때 내 저지가 같이 걸리는 것을 목표로 삼았고, 31번이라면 앞서 말한 번호들과 잘 어울리리라 생각했죠. ^^

Shane Battier: 내 버블헤드 인형들이 꽤 많이 닮았네요. 세라믹으로 변형되지 않게 된 게 이상야릇합니다.(It's strange to be immortalized in ceramic.)

- Robert Curbeam 이라는 NASA mission specialist(우주선 탑승 운용 기술자라네요;)분이 티맥의 원정 유니폼을 입고 지난 12월에 스페이스 셔틀로 13일간의 우주 임무를 수행했다고 하네요.

도요타 센터에서 Mark Polansky 선장들을 비롯한 셔틀 멤버들과 함께 티맥에게 되돌려 주는 작은 세러머니를 가졌답니다.

티맥은 지난 8월에 존슨 스페이스 센터를 방문해서 Curbeam에게 유니폼을 전달했었다고 하네요.

- 인디애나 출신인 반지 웰스가 콜츠의 수퍼볼 우승을 기념하고, 시카고 출신인 하워드와 헤드를 위해 (--;)  훈련 시간에 콜츠 헬멧을 쓰고 나타났다고 하네요.

- 헤드가 미네소타 전에서 시즌하이인 5개의 삼점을 성공시켰네요.

- 웰스의 부상

심한건 아니고 멍든 정도라고 하네요. 미네소타 전에 다시 돌아올 수 있었지만, 게임 룰 때문에 뛰진 못했다네요. 다행~

- 로켓츠의 트레이드?

야오의 부상에도 잘나가고 있는 로켓츠지만, 지난 뉴올과의 게임과 같은 유사시에 백업 포인트가드, 빅맨, 베테랑이 부족하죠. 특히 플레이오프와 같은 변수가 많은 씨리즈에선 말이죠.

2/22일 트레이드 마감 시한이 다가오고, 420만달러의 트레이드 익셉션(이하 TE)의 만기일인 2/13도 더 빨리 다가오고 있습니다. 트레이드가 추진된다면 밥 수라의 계약 or 4.2M TE가 될듯합니다.

(수라의 계약은 07-08시즌 까지 년간 약 4백만으로 되어있지만,다음 시즌에는 단지 100만달러만 보장받는다고 하네요.)

수라의 계약 + TE로 8~10M에 달하는 선수를 데려올 수 도 있겠지만, 자칫하면 사치세 지옥에 빠지는 길이라, 수라의 계약 또는 TE로 4~5M의 선수를 영입하느냐, 아니면 그대로 안고 가느냐가 될듯.

Do you think the Rockets can win the Western Conference?

The Rockets are in the conversation of conference title contenders after wrapping up a strong first half of the season, but the Mavericks and Suns are clearly the front runners for the Western Conference crown.

로켓츠가 비교적 좋았던 전반기를 보낸 이후에 컨퍼런스 타이틀 컨텐더로 언급되고 있긴 하지만, 매버릭스와 선즈가 확실히 서부 대권에 가장 가까운 팀들입니다.

The Mavericks are probably the most versatile team in the league because of their ability to play any style and the Suns are obviously being compared to some of the NBA's greatest offensive teams. Both clubs create matchup problems for the Rockets because of their ability to spread out Houston's top-rated defense.

매버릭스가 아마도 리그에서 다방면으로 가장 뛰어난 팀일 겁니다.어떠한 스타일로도 게임을 풀어나갈 능력을 갇추고 있기 때문이죠. 그리고 선즈도 분명히 리그에서 가장 뛰어난 공격형 팀으로 매버릭스에 비교될 만합니다.이 두 팀은 휴스턴의 견고한 수비의 범위를 넓히게 만들기 때문에 로켓츠로서는 많은 매치업상의 문제점을 노출시킬수 있는 팀들입니다.

Are the Rockets capable of stunning Dallas or Phoenix in a seven-game series? No question. Despite a combined 1-3 record against the two teams at the halfway point, the Rockets haven't played poorly against either team and have been in position to win each of the four games in the fourth quarter.

로켓츠가 7-게임 시리즈에서 댈러스나 피닉스에게 승리할 가능성이 있냐구요? 물론입니다. 전반기에  이 두 팀들에게 1승 3패를 기록했지만, 충분히 상대할 수 있는 모습을 보여줬고, 4게임 모두 승리할 뻔 했었습니다.

The Rockets will more than likely have to beat both the Mavs and Suns in a series to win the West and that won't be easy. But if Tracy McGrady's back problems are a distant memory and Yao Ming has regained his dominating form in April, the Rockets certainly stand a chance.

로켓츠가 서부에서 우승하기 위해서는 앞으로 매브스와 선즈 두팀과의 대결에서 더 많이 승리해야 할 것이고, 그건 쉽지 않은 일입니다. 하지만 티맥의 등문제가 희미한 기억이 되어버리고, 야오가 4월에 도미네이트했던 모습을 되찾는다면, 로켓츠에게도 확실한 조짐이 보일겁니다.

The So-Called Offseason

우리 팀의 스카우팅 디렉터인 딘 쿠퍼는 8년간을 로켓츠와 함께해 왔다. 딘은 일년내내,전세계에 걸쳐 우리 팀의 인사 스카우팅의 모든 것을 조정한다. 딘의 스카우팅 업무에 따라, 섬머 리그 엔트리에 대한 총 인원을 추려낸다. 우리 팀의 섬머 프로그램은 수년간 많은 결실을 맺어왔다. 딘과 어시스트 코치인 Tom Thibodeau(섬머 리그 팀 감독)는 - 1) 섬머 프로그램으로 부터 선수들을 골라내고 2) 지난 2년간 섬머 리그에서 불패의 성적을 거두게 하는 - 가장 큰 이유들이다. 우리는 딘의 근면함과 섬머 프로그램에 기울이는 노력에 대해 높이 평가한다. 우리팀의 섬머 프로그램에 대한 딘의 말을 들어보자.:

During the summer months when the Rockets aren’t playing games inside packed NBA arenas, people typically refer to that time as the offseason.

That description doesn't ring true in our offices.

The NBA season might not be in full swing, but a supplementary season of evaluating and scouting talent begins in earnest with the league’s annual summer leagues.

NBA 시즌중에도 비록 전력이 아니었지만, 인재들에 대한 평가와 스카우팅이라는 시즌을 보충하는 업무는 섬머리그 준비와 함께 본격적으로 시작합니다.

The summer league has many facets. We have the opportunity to evaluate our new players (draft picks), non-drafted free agents (players from current class that have gone undrafted), minor league prospects (players from the NBDL and CBA) and International free agents (American and International players who spent the previous season in Europe and abroad). From these various groups, we choose a handful of players to participate in summer activities with us.

섬머리그에서는 많은 단면을 엿볼 수 있습니다. (드래프트 픽을 통한) 팀의 새로운 선수들, (드래프트 되지 못한) 논 드래프트 FA 선수들, 마이너리그(NBDL,CBA)의 유망주들, 그리고 (유럽과 해외에서 시즌을 보낸 미국 출신 선수들과 외국 선수들을 포함한) 인터내셔널 FA 선수들을 모두 평가할 기회가 됩니다. 이러한 다양한 그룹들로 부터, 섬머리그에 참여할 소수의 선수들을 선발합니다.

The summer activities consist of a free agent camp, a mini-camp and the actual summer league. Most people are most familiar with summer league since a handful of these games are shown on ESPN and NBA-TV.

여름 활동은 FA 캠프,미니 캠프,그리고 사실상 대부분이라 할 수 있는 섬머리그로 이루어집니다. 대부분의 사람들은 ESPN과 NBA-TV로 볼 수 있는 섬머리그를 가장 먼저 떠올릴테죠.

We put in a ton of research and preparation into the construction of our summer league team. During the course of the season, we compile a list from the aforementioned groups that we would like to evaluate over the summer. Since other teams are also interested in evaluating the same players that we would like to see, there is some negotiating with the agents of a particular player about why they should be part of the Rockets summer program. Generally, this is an opportunity for guys to earn a roster spot or earn a chance to participate in veterans camp in October. We want to evaluate players that have the best opportunity to be on our team just like the agent.
 
우리는 섬머리그팀 구성을 위해 많은 조사와 준비 과정을 거칩니다. 정규 시즌 과정중에 앞서 말한 그룹들로 부터 여름에 평가할 만한 선수들을 집계합니다. 우리가 보구 싶어 하는 선수들은 다른 팀에서도 관심을 가지기에,로켓츠 섬머 프로그램에 참여할 선수들의 에이전트와 협상을 가지게 됩니다. 일반적으로 우리팀 로스터에 들거나, 10월에 있을 베테랑 캠프에 참여할 기회가 되는 것이죠. 우리는 에이전트처럼 우리팀이 될 최고의 기회를 가진 선수들을 보길 원합니다.

After the list has been compiled and our regular season roster has been evaluated, we sit down with the coaches to choose a list of prospects that we will pursue. This is a process that generally takes a several weeks to complete. The team is trying to get the best prospects and the agents/players are trying to go to a place that best affords them an opportunity to make an NBA roster.

The summer league gives our draft picks their first opportunity to play at the professional level. Steve Novak (our 2006 draft selection) played very well in the summer of 2006. In his first NBA summer league action, he made six three-pointers, picking up right where he had left off at Marquette. He proved that he would be able to make the transition from the college to the NBA three-point line.

Novak’s minutes have been limited so far in 2006-07 since he’s still learning in his rookie season. Steve has made some big shots in the time that he has gotten and he continues to improve in all areas of his game. His work ethic is wonderful. When his minutes increase and an opportunity presents itself in a larger fashion, we are confident that he will answer the call.

We have also had success finding non-drafted free agents in the summer league. We have two of those types of players in John Lucas III and Chuck Hayes. In our evaluation process, we believed both guys were good players that had slipped through the cracks and were capable of producing in the NBA.

Before joining our team, Hayes was a guy that simply helped his team win at the University of Kentucky by making winning basketball plays. He played well in the NBA pre-draft tournaments He was the MVP of the Portsmouth Invitational and he helped his team go 3-0 in the Chicago pre-draft camp. We asked Chuck to be a part of our summer program 2005. In that summer at the Minnesota Summer League, he played very well and our team went 5-0. We invited him to training camp, but we had to release him to the D-League because of we had a full roster. He continued to play well for Albuquerque in the D-League and we kept our eye on him. After dealing with some injuries, we called Chuck up from the NBDL. He played well in his minutes and earned a contract for the remainder of the season along with an option for the 2006-07 season. In the summer of 2006, he again participated in summer league and helped lead us to a 5-0 record. In two summers, Chuck has become an important piece to our regular season roster, becoming a starter.

John has been around the Rockets organization for many years, growing up in Houston with his father John Lucas, a former Rocket. Again, we saw a very skilled player that simply needed the right place and the right opportunity. John was the Big 12’s player of the year in 2004-05 and was a very capable point guard with a variety of skills and tremendous will to win. He is a unique player at his position that has both the ability to score the ball and distribute at the same time. He is amongst the safest players in the NBA with the ball -- a very important component for a young point guard trying to make his way in the league. His play has grown and he has proven himself worthy of being part of the roster and earning his minutes along the way.

In this week's mailbag, fans want to chat about Bonzi Wells' playing time, the NBA's study on flopping and whether the Rockets should consider trading Tracy McGrady.

Pierce will be fielding questions again on Feb. 2, so send in your queries.

Why is Bonzi Wells not being utilized more? He practically carried the Kings through the playoffs last year and could be a huge asset to our "not-so-deep" bench. It seems like we're wasting his talent by making him watch the game from the bench. Is this strictly because of injury, conditioning, or talent?

Bonzi Wells hasn't exactly been around the whole season to be utilized more. The Rockets guard has only played in 15 games this season and in only three since returning from a back injury. Sorry Josh, but I don't think you can say the Rockets haven't utilized a guy that hasn't really been available.

With that said, Bonzi's role appears to be on the rise. He has played at least 17 minutes in the past four games, including a 24-minute effort on Friday night, and has found a spot in the rotation as Tracy McGrady's primary backup. He is typically starting the second and fourth quarters.

Wells is a matchup nightmare against opposing guards because of his ability to post up and could certainly take some of the scoring burden off McGrady. He has also shown that he can be an effective rebounder on the offensive glass.

If Wells is consistently productive on the offensive end and brings good energy off the bench, his talent is certainly worth seeing at least 25 minutes per night. I believe the Rockets want to utilize him as their sixth man, but he just hasn't been available enough this season to secure that role. Hopefully, his 14 points and seven rebounds on Friday night are a sign that that's about to change.

HOUSTON -- The Rockets have survived a slew of injuries and finished the first half of the season with their best record in a decade.

로켓츠는 부상의 수렁에서 빠져나왔고 10년만에 최고의 성적으로 전반기를 마쳤다.

So is Houston playoff bound?

The Rockets aren't counting themselves in just yet after a strong first half.

로켓츠는 좋았던 전반기 이후를 당장은 확신하고 있지 않다.

"We put ourselves in a good position halfway through the year to do some good things and see where we can take it," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "If we're healthy and we get in (the playoffs), we'll feel fine. But we got to get in it. There is a long haul left without Yao (Ming)."

"만약 우리가 건강한 상태로 플레이오프에 돌입한다면, 매우 좋을 것입니다. 하지만 아직 완전치 못합니다. 야오가 없는 지금 괴롭고 긴 여정이 될겁니다."라고 로켓츠 감독인 제프 밴 건디가 말했다.

Despite being mentioned around the league among the top teams in the Western Conference midway through the season, the Rockets are still anticipating a grind towards the playoffs.

The Rockets (25-16) are sixth in the West after posting their best record at the halfway point since the 1996-97 season with a 31-10 mark.

They've won without Yao Ming and have improved their perimeter shooting from last season.

Big wins have been sprinkled in along the way. Houston thumped Dallas in their home opener, ended a 17-game losing skid in San Antonio and scored a big win over Miami, the defending champion, before Shaquille O'Neal was placed on the injured list.

The Rockets, however, aren't convinced their strong first half assures them of a playoff spot in April.

Since Tracy McGrady's back spasms flared up and kept him out of the lineup on Dec. 12, Van Gundy's bunch has been missing either McGrady or Yao.

The Rockets are still looking at two more months without their star center and McGrady's back could prove troublesome at any time. The team is just 11-10 since their stars began spending time in the trainer's room.

If we were healthy and we were whole, we'd (probably make the playoffs). But I know what we're going up against. We don't have one star and we're always one play away from not having McGrady. I think my experience warrants the reality of the situation. The Clippers, the Warriors and the Timberwolves are all in the same position."

Despite their recent troubles on the defensive end, the Rockets know they'll have to rely on their defense and rebounding to reach the postseason.

현재 로켓츠 팀의 수비 마무리에서의 문제점에도 불구하고, 로켓츠는 포스트 시즌에 도달하기 위해서는 수비와 리바운드에 의지해야만 한다는 것을 잘 알고 있다.

The Rockets are holding opponents to a league-low 42.1 percent shooting and are fifth in the NBA in rebounding differential. Besides holding Charlotte to a franchise-record low of 62 points, Houston has limited 11 teams under 80 through the first 2 1/2 months.

The good news is that Houston has found plenty of help from unlikely sources in Yao's absence. Dikembe Mutombo has provided a major boost with his shot blocking and rebounding and Juwan Howard has added help on the glass.

But the Rockets haven't always been sharp in those areas without their star center.

During the past four games, the Rockets have been outrebounded three times and have seen all of their opponents break the century mark. Houston ended up with a 1-3 record over that stretch.

The Rockets believe they've learned from their recent skid.

"Everyone has to take pride in doing their jobs," McGrady said. "I think everybody realizes we need to get back to playing the ball that we've been playing. We have to execute on defense and fix some of the things that we've been lacking in. We just got to get back to doing what made us a good team. We had a little slippage, but that's it. We're going to regroup."

Van Gundy is certainly hoping so.

The Rockets coach has started questioning his eight-man rotation after recent losses, but he has been careful about not making a quick change. He said he could stick with his current rotation if his team gets back to doing the things it did during a streak in which it won nine of 10 games.

The Rockets are pleased with the first half of their season and they have certainly worked their way into playoff contention.

They just can't take their start for granted in the West.

Is there any comfort in knowing that Tracy McGrady doesn't seem to overly worried?

McGrady is confident he'll play Saturday against the Denver Nuggets after missing Wednesday's game with a stiff lower back and he said that his latest back problem is "nothing major." He pointed out that he isn't experiencing spasms, but does have some stiffness in his back after going up for a dunk against the Mavericks on Tuesday night.

티맥은 뻐근했던 등 문제로 인해 결장한 수요일 게임 이후 덴버와의 게임이 펼쳐질 토요일에는 출장에 자신감을 보였고, 자신의 최근 등 상태에 대해서는 "별것아니다"라고 말했습니다. 티맥은 (이번 결장이) 경험해왔던 경련 문제 때문이 아니라고 지적했지만, 화요일밤 매버릭스전에서 덩크를 성공시킨 이후에 등쪽에서 뻐근함을 느꼇다고 합니다.

With that said, the Rockets star is obviously day-to-day for remainder of the season. He has been dealing with different back issues for some time and there is certainly no telling when his back problems might flare up.
