The Rockets certainly have time to catch the San Antonio Spurs with 17 games remaining on their schedule, but it won't be easy.

With that said, I think the Rockets are more concerned with trying to catch Utah. Really since January, Houston has been pushing for home-court advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.

Stu Jackson, the NBA's Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, is in charge of supervising officials. He's got a six-man team that analyzes how the men in stripes are performing.

I'm surprised that we've managed to go over a month in the Mailbag without a more significant push in the Bench-Rafer-for-another-point-guard campaign.

Alston might not be burying jumpers with a high frequency, but it's unfair to judge whether the point guard is having a good or bad game based on his shooting numbers alone. The ball moves around the perimeter better when Alston is on the floor. He might not always be the guy that's getting an assist on a play, but he's often the guy that makes the pass before the pass that found an open man. That, to me, is really his most important asset. Are the Rockets at their best when he's at point guard? Yes. If he's running the offense effectively and efficiently, then he's having a positive impact even on those nights when his jumper isn't dropping.

Alston rarely gets credit on the nights when he's hitting. Did anyone notice that he was 7-of-10 against the Clippers on Wednesday? But overall, the Rockets would certainly benefit if Alston was sinking at a higher rate than 36.9 percent. He could improve his overall numbers by driving a little bit more because he takes a ton of three-point shots, but then he would be passing on the look that he's already being given. Alston's adjusted field goal percentage is actually a respectable 46 percent when the number of three's he's taking are factored in.

He left the door open for someone else to get into the mix, but the coach is obviously looking to tighten his rotation more than expand it at this point in the season.

Can the Rockets compete with the best teams in the Western Conference since Yao Ming is back?

The Rockets didn't suddenly become the team to beat in the Western Conference when Yao Ming returned.

Since Yao Ming is still working his way back into playing shape, Tracy McGrady probably won't have his touches reduced right away. But the star swingman will eventually be taking fewer shots than he did during the center's absence.

But he's smart enough to understand the Rockets' best chance of winning is allowing Yao to dominate the paint -- and feeding off of that.

As far as injuries, McGrady and Yao didn't leave Monday's game against Cleveland with anything serious. McGrady had some pain in his knees after being kicked, but played through it. Yao, meanwhile, was fine after a hard spill in the fourth quarter.

Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy has gone with a rotation that pairs Yao Ming and Chuck Hayes together in the starting lineup.

He is sinking 43 percent of his shots from beyond the arc and has consistently hit big shots in the fourth quarter. Head figures to only show that shooting ability off more over the final six weeks of the season with defenses having to pay more attention to Yao Ming in the paint.

The Rockets are certainly following Lior Eliyahu's progress in Israel, but the organization isn't going to rush him across the pond. Right now, he's in an environment where he can continue receiving consistent playing time. Remember, the Rockets waited two years before bringing Vassilis Spanoulis to the States from Greece.

Why have the Rockets been struggling of late?

The Rockets have dropped four of their past six games for a myriad of reasons.

The Rockets clearly didn't have much size without Yao Ming and needed to add an extra big body in case either Dikembe Mutombo or Yao misses time in the postseason. So from that stand point, the team picked up some much-needed help in the middle. Tsakalidis might not get a ton of minutes when Yao returns in March, but the Rockets at least have one more option with size.

That, of course, could mean less playing time for Snyder barring injury or another roster move. Snyder did play well against Charlotte on Feb. 10, but the Rockets are going to stick with Wells in the rotation because of his offensive rebounding and ability to draw double teams in the paint.

I've received a ton of e-mail over the past week from fans hoping that Yao Ming will be back sooner than expected after reading his recent comments. But I would still be surprised to see him swapping elbows in the paint before mid-March. The Rockets star certainly appears to be progressing well and he's eager to get back on the court. But there's no reason to rush him. With the injury that he had, Yao and his doctors need to make sure that he is completely healed. That's why I'm guessing that he won't get cleared for game action until mid-March. It still gives him another month to test out his right leg and get back into playing shape.
