Mail Time: How will Yao's return alter the Rockets?

Rockets.com beat writer Damien Pierce opens up his mailbag each week to answer fans' questions.

So ask Pierce anything about the NBA or the Rockets. He’ll come up with an answer or an answer that sounds right. His answers, of course, are entirely his own opinion.

Guess what is on everyone's mind this week? With Yao Ming returning from injury, fans have stuffed the mail box with questions regarding Yao.

Can the Rockets compete with the best teams in the Western Conference since Yao Ming is back?

The Rockets didn't suddenly become the team to beat in the Western Conference when Yao Ming returned.

로켓츠는 야오의 복귀로 갑작스레 서부 컨퍼런스를 압도하는 팀이 되진 않았습니다.

However, with the big fella back and expected to be on the floor for the playoffs, there are certainly five words that none of the West's top four teams -- Dallas, Phoenix, San Antonio and Utah -- want to hear in April.

그러나 야오의 컴백과 함께 플레이오프에서 예상에 있어, 서부 탑 4팀 - 댈러스, 피닉스, 샌안토니오, 유타 - 중에 어느팀도 4월에 다음과 같은 말을 듣고 싶어하진 않을 겁니다.

The Rockets could potentially crack the top four over the next six weeks to make that a moot point, but right now one of the top four teams in the West would have to deal with Yao and the Rockets in the opening round of the playoffs. Regardless of what you've seen over the first four months of the regular season, that's not an enticing possibility for any of the conference's top four teams.

로켓츠는 아마 남은 6주 동안에 탑 4팀을 물리치는 것으로 쟁점을 만들지도 모릅니다. 그러나 당장은 서부 탑 4팀중 한 팀은 플레이오프에서의 첫 상대로 로켓츠와 야오를 대처해야만 할겁니다. 정규 시즌 첫 4달간 봐왔던 것에 관계없이, 서부 탑 4팀중 어느 팀도 휴스턴이 상대라는 것에 마음놓을 수는 없을 겁니다.

Sure, Houston has some weaknesses and wouldn't matchup at some positions with the West's other top teams. But with Yao, the Rockets also create their share of problems for the opponent.

물론, 휴스턴은 어떤 약점들을 가지고 있고, 서부 탑 팀들에게 매치업상 몇몇 포지션에선 상대조차 되지 않을지도 모릅니다. 그러나 야오의 존재는 로켓츠 역시도 상대팀들에게 같은 문제를 안겨줄 수 있는 거죠.

When Yao is healthy and on top of his game, the Rockets center is the most dominating inside force in the Western Conference. Add Tracy McGrady, Shane Battier and Bonzi Wells around that presence, and it's easy to see why anyone in the West might want to avoid seeing Houston early in the playoffs.

야오가 건강하고 최상의 상태라면, 서부 컨퍼런스에서 가장 도미넌트한 인사이드 포스일 겁니다. 거기다 트레이시 맥그레이디, 쉐인 배티어, 반지 웰스의 존재는 서부 다른 팀들이 플레이오프에서 일찍 휴스턴을 만나는 걸 피하고 싶어하는 이유가 되기에 충분할 겁니다.

Does that change which teams are among the favorites in the West? Maybe not. But with Yao, the Rockets can compete.
 
서부 우승후보 예상에서 변화가 있던가요? 아마도 아닐겁니다. 하지만 야오가 함께하는 로켓츠는 우승후보에 손색이 없습니다.

I know that Yao Ming is back in the lineup, and that Jeff Van Gundy wants him to carry the scoring. But Tracy McGrady has been putting up MVP numbers. Do you think Van Gundy will keep McGrady as the focale point of the offense, then go to Yao, or vice versa? Also, I saw that T-Mac and Yao both got banged up in the Cavs game on Monday. Are they both OK?

저는 야오가 라인업에 복귀한 것도 알고, 제프 밴 건디 감독이 야오가 좀더 공격에서 힘써 주길 원하는 것도 압니다. 그러나 티맥은 MVP급 스탯을 기록해 왔습니다. 밴 건디 감독이 티맥을 계속 공격의 중심에 둘까요. 아니면 반대로 야오에게? 또한 지난 월요일 클리블랜드 전에서 야오와 티맥이 부상당할 뻔 한걸 봤습니다. 그 두 선수 모두 괜찮은 건가요?

Since Yao Ming is still working his way back into playing shape, Tracy McGrady probably won't have his touches reduced right away. But the star swingman will eventually be taking fewer shots than he did during the center's absence.

야오는 여전히 예전모습으로 돌아가기 위해 노력중이기에, 티맥은 아마 지금 당장 공격 비중을 줄이진 않을 겁니다. 그러나 티맥은 결국 야오의 결장하던 때보다 슛시도를 줄이게 될겁니다.

Why? The Rockets are still at their best when the offense is being generated through the big man. Yao forces a defense to collapse into the paint and that gets open looks for everyone else. That's not to say McGrady's offensive numbers will take a significant dip. He'll still get plenty of touches. But he's smart enough to understand the Rockets' best chance of winning is allowing Yao to dominate the paint -- and feeding off of that.

왜냐구요? 로켓츠는 역시 빅맨을 통해 공격을 풀어갈때가 최상의 위력을 발휘하는 팀입니다. 야오는 페인트존을 초토화하며 수비를 압박하고 팀 동료 전원에게 오픈 찬스를 만들어 줄수 있습니다. 티맥의 공격 비중을 많이 줄일 거라는 말은 아닙니다. 여전히 많은 비중을 차지하게 될겁니다. 그러나 티맥은 야오가 페인트존을 지배하고 그것을 이용하는 것이 로켓츠가 게임에서 승리할 최고의 기회라는 것을 충분히 이해할 정도로 똑똑한 친구입니다.

As far as injuries, McGrady and Yao didn't leave Monday's game against Cleveland with anything serious. McGrady had some pain in his knees after being kicked, but played through it. Yao, meanwhile, was fine after a hard spill in the fourth quarter.

부상에 관해서는 티맥과 야오 둘다 심각한 건 아닙니다. 티맥은 걷어차인 양 무릎 부분에 약간의 통증이 있었지만, 게임을 충분히 소화해냈습니다. 한편 야오는 4쿼터에 심한 태클을 당했지만 괜찮았습니다.

Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy has gone with a rotation that pairs Yao Ming and Chuck Hayes together in the starting lineup.

로켓츠 감독인 밴 건디는 야오 밍과 척 헤이즈를 스타팅 라인업에 함께 올렸습니다.

When Yao leaves the game because of fatigue or foul trouble, Van Gundy pulls Hayes with him and sends in Dikembe Mutombo at center and Juwan Howard at power forward. Such a rotation ensures that the Rockets always have a low-post scoring threat and a quality defender with a knack for rebounding on the floor.

야오가 파울트러블과 피로로 인해 벤치로 가게 될때에는, 헤이즈도 함께 불러 들이고 무톰보를 센터로 하워드를 파워포워드로 내보냅니다. 그러한 로테이션은 로켓츠가 리바운드가 뛰어난 수준급의 수비수와 로포스트 득점원을 계속 플로어에 내보낼 수 있도록 하는 보증수표입니다.

He'll certainly evaluate how that rotation works over the next several games, but he was comfortable with that lineup earlier in the season.

밴 건디 감독은 다음 몇번의 게임을 통해 로테이션이 잘 돌아가는지를 확실히 평가할겁니다. 그러나 시즌 초반에도 선보였던 지금과 같은 라인업에 만족을 느끼고 있습니다.


Luther Head has had trouble with turnovers and I don't feel he makes that big a contribution to the team. Why do the Rockets keep him in the rotation?

Luther Head might not be the ideal backup point guard, but he's earning minutes because he has shown over the first four months of the season that he is the team's best three-point shooter. He is sinking 43 percent of his shots from beyond the arc and has consistently hit big shots in the fourth quarter. Head figures to only show that shooting ability off more over the final six weeks of the season with defenses having to pay more attention to Yao Ming in the paint.

루써 헤드는 이상적인 백업 포인트 가드가 아닐지도 모릅니다만, 지난 넉달동안 보여준 팀내 최고 3점 슈터로서의 모습 때문에 출장 시간을 얻고 있습니다. 이번 시즌에  아크 너머에서 43%의 성공률을 기록하고 있고, 4쿼터에선 견실한 클러치 슈터입니다. 페인트 존에서 야오의 존재로 인해 정규 시즌의 남은 6주간 더 많이 헤드는 자신의 슛 능력을 선보일 수 있을 겁니다.

The Rockets are certainly following Lior Eliyahu's progress in Israel, but the organization isn't going to rush him across the pond. Right now, he's in an environment where he can continue receiving consistent playing time. Remember, the Rockets waited two years before bringing Vassilis Spanoulis to the States from Greece.

로켓츠는 확실히 이스라엘에서 뛰고있는 Lior Eliyahu의 추이를 지켜보고 있습니다. 그러나 당장 대서양을 가로질러 성급하게 데려오지는 않을 겁니다. 현재 충분한 플레잉 타임을 계속 받을 수 있는 환경에 있습니다. 기억하시길. 로켓츠는 V-Span을 그리스로부터 데려오는데 2년이나 기다렸습니다.
