- 헤이즈 재계약 희망적

일단 제한적 FA라, 안그래도 휑한 로켓츠의 4번 포지션인데 헤이즈 잡겠죠. 모리 GM은 현재 FA중 밀리시치, 조 스미스, 말릭 앨런, PJ 브라운, 미키 무어에 대해 언급했지만 어떤 협상도 하진 않고 있다고.. FA 계약보다는 트레이드에 더 힘쓰고 있다고 하네요.

- Amir Johnson을 휴스턴으로?

루머라기 보다는 존슨은 어떨까하는 정도의 소식. 2005년 디트로이트의 2라운드 56픽이었죠.이제 20살인 존슨은 NBDL에서 18.9득점(62.3% FG) 9.7리바운드 3.1블락을 기록하면서 도미넌트한 모습을 보여줬습니다. 또한 키도 6-9에서 6-11로 더 컸다고 하네요. (드래프트 당시엔 6-9,220파운드)

현재 디트로이트에서는 쉬드, 맥다이스, 맥시엘 때문에 포지션이 없죠. (부럽다;) 하지만 존슨은 제한적 FA이기에 휴스턴이 데려오고자 해도 매치할 가능성이 크죠. 물론 빌업스의 연장 계약으로 인한 사치세 압박 때문에 걍 보내줄 수 있을지도 모르지만, 그러지는 않을 거 같네요.

Rockets take Oregon's Brooks in first round

The Rockets saw what they wanted and nothing else mattered.

They did not concern themselves with their roster and its glut of players shorter than the general manager. They did not consider needs or positions. They put no weight in what was expected or where their first-round choice might have still been available.

They wanted Aaron's Brooks' explosive quickness, and as stunning a first-round pick as he was, when they had their turn in the NBA Draft at No. 26 on Thursday, they grabbed him.

``We like his speed, which in today's NBA we know works,'' Rockets director of scouting Dean Cooper said. ``If you look around the league at the point guards who has success lately (ellipses) in Tony Parker and T.J. Ford, Chris Paul, guys like that, speed with the no hand-checking rule, speed in those situations we think is valuable.

``With the way Coach (Rick) Adelman is going to play with open offense and seems and those types of things, we think speed is very valuable.''

As stunning as that pick was, however, the surprise of their next selection was that they had the draft pick at all.

They traded a future second-round pick and cash to the Seattle SuperSonics, who had Memphis' second-round pick, and then selected Purdue power forward Carl Landry. With their remaining pick, the 54th overall purchased from the Magic Thursday morning, the Rockets took 6-5 ½ shooting guard Brad Newley of Australia.

Landry, a 6-7 ¾, 248-pound All-Big Ten pick, averaged 18.9 points, and 7.3 rebounds last season. He was a good scorer in the paint with a mid-range jump shot, making 73.8 percent of his shots last season.

Unlike Brooks, Landry arrives on a roster shorthanded at his position, with Juwan Howard traded to Minnesota and Chuck Hayes a free agent. The Rockets will likely seek a veteran at the position and intend to sign Hayes, but Landry could not help but see an opportunity.

``I think I can bring a lot to the table,'' Landry said. ``I'm in a way like Chuck Hayes, but I can score. I averaged 19 points in college. I'm going to rebound the ball, dive on the floor for loose balls, take charges, do little things it takes. I'm not going to be called upon right away to score. You got Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady and those guys to do that. But I'm going to give the team a few extra possessions and try to win a championship this year.

``Juwan Howard got traded. It's a little thin in the frontline especially at the power forward position. I really feel I can come in right away and make an immediate impact.''

Brooks said he had been told to expect to be taken between the 21st and 35th picks, but generally not expected to go in the first round.

A first-team All-Pac 10 selection as a senior, Brooks averaged 17.7 points and 4.3 assists last season. He elevated his stock with his play at the Orlando predraft camp and in the Rockets workouts that followed.

The move, however, gives the Rockets a glut of bodies at point guard, with the pick and the acquisition of Mike James, along with holdovers Rafer Alston, Vassilis Spanoulis and John Lucas III.

Cooper, however, said that the Rockets did not concern themselves with where they could have possibly gotten Brooks later, choosing to take him when they got the chance.

``We don't always look at where a guy is forecasted. We try to do our board on the best player we think is available or the best fit for us or a special skill. We didn't give much thought to that. We said this guy has something that applies to a NBA game.

``We just wanted to take the guy we think can change an NBA game with what he does. We said we'll take the guy we think can best change our situation.''

Brooks sounded sure he can do that. And if others were surprised by the pick, to him it made perfect sense.

``My quickness,'' Brooks said of how he became a first-round pick. ``The NBA is becoming a quicker game. I guess that attracted teams in to picking me.

``(Adelman) said they were interested in my game. They wanted to push the ball a little bit more. If that's what they want, they got the right guy.''

They thought so, too, and that was the only consideration.

Strengths: Newley has proved himself to be an outstanding scorer in Australia, playing in a league that plays very little defense. He has good athleticism for such a tall guard, and is an above average passer for shooting guard. Newley is a nice shooter who has displayed the ability to shoot the NBA 3-pointer while also hitting the midrange jumper off of the dribble. He is a hustler who attempts to use his effort on the defensive end to make up for his lack of lateral quickness.

Weaknesses: Newley struggles quite a bit on the defensive end. He doesn’t have the lateral quickness nor the experience guarding NBA caliber players to make an impact on that end of the court. He doesn’t have the best defensive instincts. Newley is awfully weak as well, and really struggles driving to his left on offense.

Outlook: The Australian scoring machine is automatically eligible for this year’s draft, and should see himself nabbed somewhere in the second round.

Australian stats are bloated due to open court style of game and level of competition plus they play 48 minute games as opposed to the standard 40 ...

Strengths: Landry was known for his strong play inside during his college career. He scores his points with a great combination of smarts, strength and finesse. He often established position deep in the trenches and carved out space to get his shots. He has great hands, outstanding footwork and great touch around the hoop. He features a sweet turnaround jumper he can utilize if he can’t back down his man.

Weaknesses: Landry has worked hard on his body since finishing his season at Purdue, but he still has a ways to go before this area is NBA-ready. His defensive anticipation and positioning need to improve as well.

Outlook: Landry helped himself by measuring out to be a legit 6’8” but he didn’t exactly separate himself during the pre-draft camps. He will give himself a great chance to land in the second round with strong private workouts

Weaknesses: Height leaves a little to be desired at 6-7 to 6-8, he may struggle to effectively play the post in the NBA … To compound matters, Landry is just an average athlete not able to outjump his opponents nor explode off the floor offensively … Conditioning and stamina are still points of concern as he can appear winded at times … Not a great rebounder out of position … When defending bigger players, Landry can be prone to picking up quick fouls due to being overly aggressive … Defensively he lacks the explosiveness to be a shot blocker on any level … While kind of a tweener, his lack of consistent three point shooting and sub par perimeter defense will inhibit him from playing the small forward position … In the post, Landry will allow his man too much space and does a poor job of denying position … Potentially he is near his limit …

딱 한달 전에 체크했을 때는 로켓츠의 득점력 빈곤을 메워줄 스윙맨을 많이 지목했었지만, 얼마전 마이크 제임스 - 주완 하워드 트레이드 때문인지 4번 포지션을 채워줄 선수들로 지목하네요. 얼마전 데릴 모레이가 말했었죠. 팀에 필요한 선수보다는 포텐셜을 보고 뽑겠다고.. 과연 내일 드래프트가 기대되는 군요.

신체 근력이 뛰어나며 볼없는 상태에서 무브가 무척 좋다. 스크린을 잘 이용한다. 언셀피쉬한 선수이며 BQ가 뛰어나 게임에 대한 판단력이 좋다. 미드 점퍼는 정말 뛰어나고 work-ethic은 NCAA에서도 손꼽힌다. 준수한 운동능력이지만 두드러지진 않는다. 퍼스트 스탭이 부족, 운동능력이 좋은 수비수에게 고전할 가능성이 크다.

얇은 체격을 더 벌크업할 수 있다면 nba에 잘 적응할 수 있을 것이다. nba 레벨의 수비수들을 상대로 대학때와 같은 공격력을 보여줄 수 있을지는 의문이다. 하지만 좋은 탤런트를 가지고 있고 볼 컨트롤과 패싱은 수준급이다.

팀을 파이널 포로 이끌면서 주가가 올라야 했음에도 각팀 GM들의 머리엔 트랙터 테일러의 케이스가 먼저 떠오를 것이다. 사이즈가 문제다. 과연 6-9의 신장으로 리그에 와서도 센터로 뛸 수 있을까? 82 게임을 소화할 수 있는 내구력은? 과체중 문제는? 포스트 업 게임을 좀더 발전시킬 수 있을까? 모든 것이 의문점이다.

주완과 마이크의 트레이드는 로켓츠가 필요한 PG 포지션을 채워주었다. 현재 제한적 FA인 척 헤이즈 만이 로켓츠가 가능한한 유일한 파워포워드일 것이다. 그런면에서 로켓츠는 프론트 코트를 채워줄 '빅 베이비' 지명할지도 모른다. 데이비스는 뛰어난 로포스트 플레이어이며, 오랜 기간 컨디셔닝에 대한 의문이 있지 않았다면 더 높은 순위에 있었을 선수이다.
