Shane Battier has surprisingly never been on the NBA's All-Defensive Team.

So ask Pierce anything about the NBA or the Rockets. He’ll come up with an answer or an answer that sounds right. His answers, of course, are entirely his own opinion.

In this week's mailbag, fans want to know how it's possible that Shane Battier has never been a member of the NBA's All-Defensive Team and if the team would consider sending some of its rookies to the NBA Developmental League.

Pierce will be fielding questions again on Feb. 15, so send in your queries.

Why hasn't Shane Battier ever been named to the NBA's All-Defensive Team?

Puzzling, isn't it? Battier clearly entered the league with a reputation for being a solid defender -- he was twice named college basketball's national defensive player of the year by the NABC -- but he has been overshadowed by other defensive specialists throughout his six-year NBA career.

What gives? NBA coaches choose the award and, judging from the remarks of opposing coaches when they're in town, they clearly view Battier as one of the league's solid defenders. But the guys in the suits are still influenced by media coverage and reputation. Battier doesn't get a lot of pub for his defense because he doesn't lead the league in steals or blocked shots.

He also hasn't been on a team that has been past the first round of the NBA playoffs. That might not sound significant and shouldn't go into the decision process, but the playoffs are where guys like San Antonio's Bruce Bowen built their reputations as defensive stoppers. If Battier is slowing down one of the game's best in a playoff series, the accolades will probably start piling up ... even though he didn't become a top-notch defender overnight.

Would the Rockets consider assigning Vassilis Spanoulis or Steve Novak to the NBA's Developmental League? I don't see what harm that would do them. They would get some solid minutes and would probably improve their game.

The NBA Developmental League is clearly beneficial to some rookies, but I believe the Rockets are better off keeping Vassilis Spanoulis and Steve Novak in town.

NBDL은 확실히 어떤 루키들에게 있어서는 더 나을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 저는 V-Span과 노박이에게 있어서는 로켓츠와 함께 하는 것이 더 나으리라 봅니다.

Novak's shooting range could wind up helping the Rockets down the road, especially in situations when the team has to quickly catch up on the scoreboard. Besides that, Novak clearly needs to add more muscle strength so staying in Houston will continue to give him an opportunity to work with the team's strength and training staff.

Spanoulis, meanwhile, does need to work on his shooting range and lower his turnovers. But he is an experienced international player and came to the U.S. to play in the NBA. He wants to be with his Houston teammates.

반면에, V-Span은 슈팅 레인지를 좀더 늘려야 하고 턴오버도 줄여야 합니다. 그러나 이미 경험있는 해외 출신 선수이고 NBA에 뛰기 위해 미국에 왔습니다. V-Span 자신도 휴스턴 팀에서 뛰길 원합니다.


Are the Rockets considering getting a backup point guard before the trading deadline?

The Rockets are always exploring options to improve and showed as much over the summer with their flurry of offseason moves. If the team can acquire a better reserve point guard before the Feb. 22 trading deadline, they will.

Is there a reason why Kirk Snyder is not playing? I thought he was recovered from his broken hand. I know he plays the same position as Luther Head and Bonzi Wells, and there are not enough minutes to go around. But, since Wells got hurt on Monday night, I thought Snyder would replace him in Jeff Van Gundy's rotation for the next couple of games.

Snyder simply hasn't been able to get back into the Rockets' eight-man rotation since returning from his hand injury.

Before Wells missed Tuesday's game against Memphis with a sore lower back, Snyder had made only a few cameo appearances since being cleared by the team's medical staff on Jan. 5. He's actually spent the majority of the games since his return on the inactive list. Snyder was activated for Tuesday's game because of Wells' absence, but didn't see any action.

Wells' recent emergence from the bench and Head's clutch shooting are certainly reasons why Snyder hasn't earned more playing time, but the third-year guard was hurt by not being on the floor for the past two months. The Rockets found a rotation that worked over that time and Snyder didn't have a place in the lineup because he was out. Snyder is also still trying to earn Jeff Van Gundy's trust to get back in the lineup. Snyder, who arrived from New Orleans/Oklahoma City over the summer in a trade, was still learning his role with his new team when he got hurt. After being away from the team for nearly two months with his hand injury, he is still trying to find his way.

I know this is worn-out question, but can you give a time table on Yao Ming's return?

Sure. The Rockets center's fractured right tibia is healing on schedule and he is expected to return in mid- to late March. That means Yao will likely play the final month of the regular season.

네, 야오는 아시다시피 경골 골절을 회복중이고, 3월 중~하순 무렵에 돌아오리라 예상됩니다. 그 말은 정규 시즌 마지막 달에는 야오의 플레이를 볼 수 있으리라는 말이 되겠죠.

For now, Yao is working out on an underwater treadmill and catching footballs on the practice court. No word on whether an NFL career is in the works.

현재, 야오는 수중에서의 단순한 훈련을 반복하고 있고, 연습 코트에서 풋볼공을 잡는 훈련을 하고 있습니다. 머 그렇다고 NFL을 준비한다는 건 아닙니다. :)
