STEVE KERR'S THREE POINTS
Player of the Week
Dwyane Wade – The Heat welcomed back Shaquille O'Neal to the lineup and went 3-0 as Wade averaged almost 34 points a game. His 24-point fourth-quarter performance against Cleveland was one of the most amazing 12-minute stretches you'll see. Wade also had his jersey retired at Marquette the night before the Heat beat the Bucks at the Bradley Center. Not a bad week for one of the league's greatest players.

Stat of the Week
56.6 – That's Jason Kapono's three-point shooting percentage, by far the best in the NBA. With Shaq back in the lineup and Wade penetrating at will, opponents now have another weapon to fear in Kapono.

Game of the Week
Wednesday: San Antonio Spurs at Washington Wizards – East meets West in a major contrast in styles. The Wizards will try to run the Spurs off the floor, but San Antonio is one of the best clubs in the NBA at controlling tempo.

When the Indiana Pacers and Golden State Warriors pulled the trigger on the eight-player blockbuster trade three weeks ago, the prevailing thought was that the Warriors got the better end of the deal. They saved money down the road, added a couple of the athletic wing-types that Don Nelson loves and seemed poised to get better.

But while Golden State has struggled to find its groove since the trade, the Pacers have taken off.

After losing to the Knicks in its first game featuring Troy Murphy, Mike Dunleavy and Ike Diogu, Indiana has been on a roll, winning six of its last seven games. And while none of the trio has played exceedingly well – Murphy is averaging 8.3 points since the trade, Dunleavy 11.3 and Diogu 5.1 – the move seemed to create better chemistry and open up opportunities for the rest of the Pacer players.

Danny Granger is playing with great confidence. Jermaine O'Neal is dominating on the block, and Jamaal Tinsley has enjoyed his best stretch in a long time. The move seems to have energized the team, and Rick Carlisle has Indiana right in the thick of things in the Central Division. A 3-0 week also means that the Pacers have climbed into the top 10 for the first time all season.

Here's a look at this week's rankings (records and statistics are through Feb. 4):

Dallas 1. Dallas Mavericks (39-9, Last ranking: 2) – 매브스의 벤치 뎁쓰는 얼마나 대단한건지; 시즌 대부분을 예비전력으로 존재했던 오스틴 크로셔였지만, 조쉬 하워드가 결장한 시애틀전에서 34득점이나 해버렸네;

Phoenix 2.
Phoenix Suns (37-10, Last ranking: 1) –

San Antonio 3.

Utah 4. Utah Jazz (31-17, Last ranking: 6) –

Houston 5.
Houston Rockets (29-17, Last ranking: 5) –

Detroit 6. Detroit Pistons (28-18, Last ranking: 7) –

L.A. Lakers 7. Los Angeles Lakers (29-19, Last ranking: 8) – 8

Washington 8. Washington Wizards (27-19, Last ranking: 4) –

Chicago 9. Chicago Bulls (28-20, Last ranking: 9) –

Indiana 10. Indiana Pacers (26-21, Last ranking: 13) – 6

Toronto 11. Toronto Raptors (25-23, Last ranking: 14) –

Cleveland 12. Cleveland Cavaliers (27-21, Last ranking: 10) –

L.A. Clippers 13. Los Angeles Clippers (24-23, Last ranking: 12) –

Miami 14. Miami Heat (22-25, Last ranking: 19) –

Denver 15. Denver Nuggets (23-22, Last ranking: 11) –

New Orleans 16. New Orleans Hornets (21-26, Last ranking: 20) –

Orlando 17. Orlando Magic (25-23, Last ranking: 18) –

New Jersey 18. New Jersey Nets (22-26, Last ranking: 15) –

Minnesota 19. Minnesota Timberwolves (22-25, Last ranking: 17) –

New York 20. New York Knicks (21-28, Last ranking: 22) –

Charlotte 21. Charlotte Bobcats (18-29, Last ranking: 23) – 12

Atlanta 22. Atlanta Hawks (18-28, Last ranking: 25) –

Golden State 23. Golden State Warriors (22-26, Last ranking: 16) –

Sacramento 24. Sacramento Kings (19-26, Last ranking: 27) –

Portland 25. Portland Trail Blazers (20-29, Last ranking: 21) –

Philadelphia 26. Philadelphia 76ers (15-33, Last ranking: 24) –

Seattle 27. Seattle SuperSonics (17-30, Last ranking: 26) –

Milwaukee 28. Milwaukee Bucks (18-30, Last ranking: 28) –

Memphis 29. Memphis Grizzlies (12-36, Last ranking: 29) –

Boston 30. Boston Celtics (12-34, Last ranking: 30) –

Jordan, Wilkins, Dr. J to judge slam dunk competition
February 5, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- The guys judging the slam dunk competition might be better than the ones competing in it.

Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins lead four former champions who will serve as judges for the last competition of All-Star Saturday night. They will be joined by Hall of Famer Julius Erving and two other champs who will play in the All-Star game: Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter.

New York guard Nate Robinson will try to defend his title in the Feb. 17 event in Las Vegas. Orlando All-Star Dwight Howard, Chicago rookie Tyrus Thomas and Boston's Gerald Green round out the field.

After the 5-foot-9 Robinson needed 14 attempts to complete a dunk in last year's dunk-off, a new rule is being implemented this season allowing competitors 2 minutes to complete a dunk once they've received the ball from the referee. If they haven't dunked within that time, they will have two more chances to do so.

STEVE KERR'S THREE POINTS
Performance of the Week
Jamal Crawford – His 52-point game against Miami included 16 straight made shots, which hasn't been accomplished by any NBA player in the last 10 years. Crawford hit eight out of 10 threes and a series of leaning runners in one of the great shooting performances you'll ever see.

Quote of the Week
Kevin Garnett, after the Minnesota Timberwolves successfully slowed down Sam Cassell in Saturday's win over the Los Angeles Clippers: "We know Sam gets that team going. We know the other guys don't really share the ball like he does and they tend to look for their numbers." The Clippers tied their season low for assists with 12 in the 101-87 loss.

Game of the Week
Thursday: San Antonio Spurs at Phoenix Suns – The Spurs beat the Suns in San Antonio early in the season in overtime, but that was when Phoenix was mired in a slump. Now the Suns are rolling, but this will be their toughest test in a long time.

It took half the season, but the streaking Suns finally made it past the Dallas Mavericks to take over the top spot in the rankings.

Phoenix's current 17-game winning streak comes on the heels of a 15-game streak earlier in the season. All in all, the Suns have won an amazing 33 of their last 35 games, thanks to the return of Amare Stoudemire, the wizardry of Steve Nash and a much-improved defense.

The Suns lead the NBA in point differential at 9.3, and they hold their opponents to 45.1-percent shooting – good for 10th in the league. Not bad for a club that's supposed to be all style and no substance.

If there's one blemish on Phoenix's resume so far, it's that it hasn't beaten the top teams in the West. The Suns are a combined 0-6 against the Mavericks, Lakers, Spurs and Jazz. They'll get their chance to change that this week with games against Utah and San Antonio as Phoenix tries to continue its fantastic stretch.

Here's a look at this week's rankings (records and statistics are through Jan. 28):

Phoenix 1. Phoenix Suns (36-8, Last ranking: 2) – NBA

Dallas 2. Dallas Mavericks (36-9, Last ranking: 1) –

San Antonio 3. San Antonio Spurs (32-14, Last ranking: 3) –

Washington 4. Washington Wizards (26-17, Last ranking: 6) –

Houston 5. Houston Rockets (27-16, Last ranking: 8) –

Utah 6. Utah Jazz (29-16, Last ranking: 4) –

Detroit 7. Detroit Pistons (25-17, Last ranking: 9) –

L.A. Lakers 8. Los Angeles Lakers (27-17, Last ranking: 5) – LA

Chicago 9. Chicago Bulls (26-19, Last ranking: 10) –

Cleveland 10. Cleveland Cavaliers (25-19, Last ranking: 7) –

Denver 11. Denver Nuggets (22-19, Last ranking: 11) –

L.A. Clippers 12. Los Angeles Clippers (22-22, Last ranking: 16) –

Indiana 13. Indiana Pacers (23-21, Last ranking: 13) –

Toronto 14. Toronto Raptors (22-23, Last ranking: 17) –

New Jersey 15. New Jersey Nets (21-23, Last ranking: 12) –

Golden State 16. Golden State Warriors (21-23, Last ranking: 19) –

Minnesota 17. Minnesota Timberwolves (21-22, Last ranking: 15) –

Orlando 18. Orlando Magic (23-21, Last ranking: 14) –

Miami 19. Miami Heat (19-25, Last ranking: 13) –

New Orleans 20. New Orleans Hornets (18-25, Last ranking: 21) –

Portland 21. -_- (I'd like to buy a conscience, please.)

New York 22. New York Knicks (19-27, Last ranking: 18) –

Charlotte 23. Charlotte Bobcats (15-28, Last ranking: 22) –

Philadelphia 24. Philadelphia 76ers (14-31, Last ranking: 28) –

Atlanta 25. Atlanta Hawks (15-27, Last ranking: 25) –

Seattle 26. (No rest for the weary.)

Sacramento 27. Sacramento Kings (17-25, Last ranking: 26) –

Milwaukee 28. Milwaukee Bucks (18-26, Last ranking: 27) –

Memphis 29. Memphis Grizzlies (11-34, Last ranking: 30) –

Boston 30. OTL

NCAA's Top 20 Freshmen

20 Greivis Vasquez | 6-5 guard, Maryland

9.4 ppg, 4.0 apg, 3.4 rpg

Vasquez, a combo guard from Venezuela, has helped the Terps to a 15-4 start as a high-energy sixth man. He had a season-high 17 points -- on five threes -- in Maryland's loss at Virginia on Wednesday.

19   Quincy Pondexter | 6-7 forward, Washington

12.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 50.3 FG%

The son of former Long Beach State star Roscoe Pondexter has already had four 20-point games in his first season with the Huskies. "Q" could emerge as one of the Pac-10's biggest stars as a sophomore, especially if teammate Spencer Hawes opts to turn pro.

18   Tajuan Porter | 5-6 guard, Oregon

12.7 ppg, 2.7 apg, 1.5 rpg

The pint-sized guard from Detroit was one of the early season's biggest surprises, scoring 27, 28 and 38 points in his first three games. Porter has established himself as a player who must be defended on the perimeter -- even though he's taken a backseat role since the return of fellow Motor City product Malik Hairston to Oregon's lineup.

Photo: John W. McDonough/SI

17  Jon Scheyer | 6-5 guard, Duke

11.8 ppg, 2.2 apg, 3.1 rpg

Scheyer has been a steady -- and tireless -- contributor alongside the mercurial Greg Paulus in the Blue Devils' backcourt. The lanky freshman averages nearly as many minutes per game (34.0) as team leader Josh McRoberts (34.2) and put up 25 points in a rout of Miami on Sunday.

Photo: Bill Frakes/SI

16   Hasheem Thabeet | 7-3 center, UConn

6.8 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 4.1 bpg

The big Tanzanian leads all major-conference players in block percentage at 17.0 through Sunday and is shooting 56.3 percent from the field. He gets the nod here ahead of higher-scoring freshman teammate Jerome Dyson, simply because Thabeet impacts such a monumental number of shots on defense.

Photo: AP

15  Robin Lopez | 7-0 center, Stanford

10.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 2.3 bpg

Lopez's minutes have increased during Pac-10 play, and the big-haired big man has delivered, averaging 12.5 points and 6.0 boards. If the Cardinal is going to make a run to the NCAA tournament, they will need to exploit Lopez's height advantage in an undersized conference.

14  Wayne Ellington | 6-4 guard, North Carolina

12.3 ppg, 2.6 apg, 1.9 rpg

The Tar Heels' smoothest player has taken on a complementary role to Tyler Hansbrough and Brandan Wright this season, but could really explode as a sophomore. He's played will on big stages, scoring 19 against Ohio State, 17 against Kentucky and 11 in Wednesday's win at Clemson.

Photo: David E. Klutho/SI

13  Spencer Hawes | 6-11 center, Washington

15.2 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 1.9 bpg

The Huskies have slumped to an ugly 1-5 start in the Pac-10 and may be in jeopardy of missing the NCAA tournament, but Hawes has stayed strong in league play. The Seattle big man has shot at least 50 percent from the field and scored in double figures in four of those five conference losses.

Photo: John W. McDonough/SI

12 Javaris Crittenton | 6-5 guard, Georgia Tech

14.2 ppg, 5.9 apg, 3.6 rpg

Yet another star in a banner year for freshman floor generals -- along with Texas' D.J. Augustin, Ohio State's Mike Conley Jr. and UNC's Tywon Lawson -- Crittenton is cut from the classic Yellow Jackets scoring-PG mold. He had 23 points and five assists in Saturday's win over Florida State.

11  Daequan Cook | 6-5 guard, Ohio State

13.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 46.6 3-pt %

Cook has taken a backseat to Greg Oden since the big man made his debut in December, but there were times when the NBA-sized guard carried the Buckeyes early in the season. He already has six 20-point games and is OSU's most accurate gunner from long distance.

Photo: David E. Klutho/SI

10  Luke Harangody | 6-8 forward, Notre Dame

12.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 52.6 FG%

Harangody is the most-efficient offensive player on the Fighting Irish -- and one of the best players in the nation in that category -- yet he's averaging just 18.7 minutes per game. Big Luke, who has the appearance of an offensive lineman from the 1960s, has scored in double-figures in all but four of ND's games.

9  Stephen Curry | 6-0 guard, Davidson

19.0 ppg, 3.5 apg, 4.5 rpg

Del Curry's kid -- who pronounces his name STEFF-ON -- was completely under the recruiting radar coming out of high school in Charlotte, but he has already emerged as one of the top mid-major scorers in the country. He's led the Wildcats, who are currently on a 12-game winning streak, to a 16-3 start.
Text: Luke Winn/SI.com
Photo: Brian A. Westerholt/WireImage.com

8  Darrell Arthur | 6-9 forward, Kansas

11.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 2.1 bpg

Arthur stepped up big time for Kansas after the departure of C.J. Giles, scoring 19 points in the Jayhawks' win over Florida in Las Vegas earlier this season. His production has declined in Big 12 play -- he's averaging 7.3 points and 3.0 boards -- but he remains pass-happy forward Julian Wright's favorite target in the post.
Text: Luke Winn/SI.com
Photo: Greg Nelson/SI

Mike Conley Jr. | 6-1 guard, Ohio State

9.8 ppg, 6.6 apg, 3.5 rpg

Conley, who took over the Buckeyes' point guard duties from veteran Jamar Butler, already has three double-digit assist games this season and a 3.3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. His 10-dime, zero-turnover performance against Indiana on Jan. 2 was a masterpiece.
Text: Luke Winn/SI.com
Photo: Bob Rosato/SI

Chase Budinger | 6-7 forward, Arizona

15.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.9 apg

The former prep volleyball superstar and McDonald's All-American Game co-MVP dropped 32 points on Northern Arizona in his second college game. He hasn't kept up that pace all season -- struggling lately in losses to Washington State and Oregon -- but is still one of the nation's most dangerous inside-outside threats.
Text: Luke Winn/SI.com
Photo: John W. McDonough/SI

D.J. Augustin | 5-11 guard, Texas

13.7 ppg, 6.6 apg, 1.6 spg

Augustin, a Hurricane Katrina refugee whose family relocated in Texas, opted to stay in the Lone Star State for college and has exploded along with fellow frosh Kevin Durant. The speedy point guard had 19 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in UT's thrilling, triple-overtime loss to Oklahoma State.
Text: Luke Winn/SI.com
Photo: Greg Nelson/SI

Ryan Anderson | 6-9 forward, Cal

17.3 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 48.6% FGs

Anderson came out of relative obscurity -- he was 98th on Rivals.com's 150 for the Class of 2006 -- to become one the nation's best freshman scorers. He's put up double-figure points in all but one of Cal's games, and has kept the Bears from falling off the Pac-10 map after losing Leon Powe.
Text: Luke Winn/SI.com
Photo: AP

Brandan Wright | 6-10 forward, North Carolina

15.7 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 65.0 FGs%

On a team oozing with NBA talent, Wright has solidified himself as the top pro prospect -- and could be the third pick in the 2007 Draft if he chooses to leave after this season. He shows up for big games, like Wednesday's road blowout of Clemson in which he had 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
Text: Luke Winn/SI.com
Photo: David E. Klutho/SI

Greg Oden | 7-0 center, Ohio State

14.0 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 4.0 bpg

A right wrist injury has prevented Oden from taking the nation by storm, but he's still dominating enough to hold on to his spot as the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. After missing the Buckeyes' first seven games, Oden returned wearing a black wrist brace and shooting free-throws left-handed -- making a surprising 59.7 percent.
Text: Luke Winn/SI.com
Photo: David E. Klutho/SI

Kevin Durant | 6-9 forward, Texas

24.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 49.1 FGs%

What was supposed to be the Year of Oden has turned into the Year of Durant. The Longhorns' K.G.-in-the-making has scored at least 20 points in his first seven games of 2006-07, and has actually turned it up a notch in the Big 12. He's averaging 34.0 points and 13.5 rebounds in conference play.

By Steve Kerr, Yahoo! Sports

Steve Kerr
Yahoo! Sports

The NBA season is officially at the halfway mark, and several themes have emerged.

The Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns are by far the two best teams, the Atlantic Division will be won by a mediocre club, and this year's rookie class is the weakest in recent memory.

Phil Jackson has his team back in contention, Pat Riley hopes to have his there by April and Dwane Casey got a raw deal.

Point guards are dominating the league like never before, dominant big men are close to extinction, and running and gunning is back in style.

Of course, things change quickly in the NBA, and next month the league landscape could be totally different than it is now. But with January quickly disappearing, it's time for our midseason awards.

Most Valuable Player: Steve Nash.
Nash beats out Dirk Nowitzki and Kobe Bryant, both of whom are having spectacular seasons. But Nash is playing at a level that few, if any point guards in the history of the game, have ever played. He makes the game so easy for the Suns that they seem to get a good shot every time down the floor. His combination of shooting range, ball-handling ability, use of his left hand and an incredible understanding of the game's nuances – passing angles, defensive alignments, teammates' strengths, etc. – make him virtually impossible to guard.

Nowitzki is an unbelievable player who has led the Mavericks to the NBA's best record. He is an impossible matchup at 7-foot tall with shooting range and ball-handling skills. (Has there ever been a player like him in NBA history?) Nowitzki has elevated his game the last two years with his willingness to take the ball hard to the basket and draw fouls. He's no longer dependent on his outside shot, so regardless of whether his shot is going in, Nowitzki can dominate a game.

Bryant has overcome the one weakness that has plagued his game: an understanding of when to take over and when to involve his teammates. Kobe no longer is single-minded in his will to score. Instead, he operates on a level that allows the Los Angeles Lakers to succeed, depending on what is needed. He is taking seven fewer shots per game, but he's also shooting a career-high 47 percent to become more efficient than ever. Bryant's leadership has grown by leaps and bounds – to the point where his teammates are comfortable, confident and making plays.

Honorable mentions: Dwyane Wade (Heat), Kevin Garnett (Timberwolves) and Gilbert Arenas (Wizards).

Rookie of the Year: Andrea Bargnani.
The Toronto Raptors used the NBA's No. 1 overall pick on Bargnani, and it looks like they made the right selection in a weak draft. After a slow start, Bargnani has begun to find his confidence with increased playing time. He has three-point range, can put the ball on the floor and, at 7 feet, can shoot over the top of people. Bargnani's numbers aren't great (10 points and four rebounds in 23 minutes of action), but he is showing great potential.

Bargnani beats out Brandon Roy, who has more impressive numbers (15 points a game), but Roy missed 20 games due to a left heel injury. Still, Roy looks very impressive and should be the Portland Trail Blazers' starting two guard for a long time to come. Adam Morrison also deserves consideration for averaging 13.5 points for the Charlotte Bobcats, but he has been plagued by inconsistent shooting (37.7 percent).

Honorable mentions: Paul Millsap (Jazz), Randy Foye (Timberwolves) and Jordan Farmar (Lakers).

Coach of the Year: Phil Jackson.
Most observers felt the Lakers were several years away from being contenders when Jackson returned to the sidelines last season. However, they're contenders right now. And once Lamar Odom comes back from his knee injury, L.A. will be a team no one will wants to deal with in the playoffs.

Jackson has given his team direction and, as he has done his entire career, given confidence to his bench players. It is no coincidence that Luke Walton, Smush Parker, Sasha Vujacic, Ronny Turiaf, Jordan Farmar and Maurice Evans are all enjoying solid seasons. Jackson's triangle offense gets the role players involved and provides them opportunities to score.

Jackson wins out over Avery Johnson and Jerry Sloan, each of whom has led his team to division leads.

Johnson – the Coach of the Year winner last season – has continued his renovation of the Mavericks, who two years ago were a shoot-first scoring machine but are now terrific defensively and the NBA's most balanced team. Sloan has brought the Jazz back from a couple of sub-par seasons, and he has done it the same way he's always coached: by getting his players to play hard, execute offensively with sharp cuts and ball movement and compete every night.

Honorable mentions: Eddie Jordan (Wizards), Mike D'Antoni (Suns) and Jeff Van Gundy (Rockets).

Sixth Man Award: Leandro Barbosa.
Ben Gordon was in the midst of running away with this award until Scott Skiles put him back into the Chicago Bulls' starting lineup. That leaves Barbosa, who is the Suns' energizer off the bench. With backup point guard duties added to his role this season, he has been a stabilizing force behind Steve Nash. But his main job is to come into the game with Nash and increase Phoenix's already blistering tempo.

Barbosa runs the wing as fast as anyone in the NBA, and his unusual looking shot is surprisingly effective. He is scoring 16 points per game, shooting 46 percent from the field and 39 percent from the three-point stripe. He wins the award over Corey Maggette, Earl Boykins and Kyle Korver, all of whom are scoring points and producing offense for their teams. But as a general rule, you don't win awards unless your teams are winning, so that eliminates all three.

Honorable mentions: Brent Barry (Spurs) and Maurice Evans (Lakers).

Most Improved Player: Luke Walton.
After losing 15 pounds in the offseason, Walton added a level of quickness that has allowed him to get around defenders. As a result, he is much more feared as an offensive threat. Walton has also gained confidence in his outside shot and is shooting much better from the three-point line (39 percent). With Lamar Odom's injury, Walton became the Lakers' second-best player after Bryant, and his play has helped L.A. maintain a place among the league's top five or six teams.

Walton gets the nod over Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz and the Sacramento Kings' Kevin Martin.

Williams' terrific point guard play has helped the Jazz become a premier team in the NBA again. He's a threat to score or pass, and he usually makes the right decision on which one to do. And the biggest thing? He's gained the confidence of Jerry Sloan. If Williams hadn't played so well in the final third of last season, he probably would be more qualified than Walton to win the award.

The same goes for Martin, who showed flashes of brilliance at the end of last season, then took over the starting guard spot in Sacramento after the departure of Bonzi Wells. Martin is having an all-star type season, averaging 20.6 points and shooting the ball extremely well (49.6 percent). His quickness is too much for most defenders to handle.

Honorable mentions: Smush Parker (Lakers), Josh Howard (Mavericks), Matt Carroll (Bobcats).

Comeback Player of the Year: Amare Stoudemire.
After a painstaking first couple of weeks in which Stoudemire was timid and ineffective coming off the bench, the Suns' talented young big man stepped into a starting role and regained his old form. Stoudemire is back to his old ways, running the floor, hammering home rim-rattling dunks and blocking shots from the weak side. His comeback has helped Phoenix win an incredible 32 of its last 35 games since a 1-5 start.

Stoudemire edges out Carlos Boozer, who played only 33 games last season for Utah due to an injured hamstring but is healthy and playing at an All-Star level. Boozer is averaging 22 points and 12 boards for the Northwest-leading Jazz.

Honorable mention: Quentin Richardson (Knicks).

Executive of the Year: Kevin O'Connor.
The Jazz made some subtle moves that have given them toughness and depth. On draft day, O'Connor selected Ronnie Brewer, who has provided versatile athleticism on the wing, and Paul Millsap, who has been the steal of the draft. A second-round pick, Millsap is a relentless rebounder. The trade for Derek Fisher completed O'Connor's project, as the veteran guard has been a tough defender, clutch shooter and mentor for Deron Williams.

O'Connor beats out Mark Warkentein, who not only pulled off the Allen Iverson trade for the Denver Nuggets but also landed Steve Blake in a nice, under-the-radar move that gave the Nuggets the pass-first point guard they needed. Bryan Colangelo, who took over the Raptors last summer, also deserves consideration for acquiring T.J. Ford and importing a couple of nice role players: Anthony Parker and Jorge Garbajosa. Both were signed as free agents after playing overseas.

Honorable mention: Carroll Dawson (Rockets).

STEVE KERR'S THREE POINTS
Team of the Week
New Jersey Nets – The Nets won four straight games, finally reaching the .500 mark on the season. Jason Kidd has elevated his game, filling up the stat sheet and carrying his team on his back.

Quote of the Week
Allen Iverson talking about Portland's Sergio Rodriquez after the rookie recorded 23 points and 10 assists against Denver – "If he stays with it, the sky's the limit for him."

Game of the Week
Friday: Denver Nuggets at Utah JazzCarmelo Anthony's third game back from his suspension is a biggie: a matchup with the division-leading Jazz. If the Nuggets are going to win the Northwest Division title, this is a crucial game for them.

A year ago at the halfway point of the NBA season, Detroit was running away from the rest of the league with a 35-6 record. What does that have to do with this season? Well, it proves that things change quickly.

What looked like a probable Pistons championship run unraveled late in May, and Miami – a team that struggled through the first half of the year – took home the Larry O'Brien Trophy. In other words, whatever is going on now may not matter in June.

Still, what is apparent halfway through this season is that there aren't very many good teams out there. Dallas and Phoenix are both fantastic and San Antonio and Miami figure to improve, but who else is there? The Lakers are ranked fifth this week, but they keep losing to lousy teams. The Rockets? Too many injuries. Cleveland? Still young. Chicago? No inside game. Utah? Maybe.

There's a long way to go, and maybe one of those teams (or another one) will emerge. But at this point, it looks like Dallas, Phoenix and everyone else.

Here's a look at this week's rankings (records and statistics are through Jan. 21):

Dallas 1. Dallas Mavericks (34-8, Last ranking: 1) –

Phoenix 2. Phoenix Suns (32-8, Last ranking: 2) –

San Antonio 3. San Antonio Spurs (29-13, Last ranking: 3) –

Utah 4. Utah Jazz (27-14, Last ranking: 8) –

L.A. Lakers 5. Los Angeles Lakers (26-15, Last ranking: 6) –

Washington 6. Washington Wizards (24-16, Last ranking: 10) –

Cleveland 7. Cleveland Cavaliers (24-16, Last ranking: 5) –

Houston 8. Houston Rockets (25-16, Last ranking: 4) –

Detroit 9. Detroit Pistons (23-16, Last ranking: 7) –

Chicago 10. Chicago Bulls (23-18, Last ranking: 11) –

Denver 11. Denver Nuggets (20-17, Last ranking: 15) –

New Jersey 12. New Jersey Nets (20-20, Last ranking: 17) –

Miami 13. Miami Heat (18-22, Last ranking: 14) –

Orlando 14. Orlando Magic (22-19, Last ranking: 9) –

Minnesota 15.

L.A. Clippers 16. Los Angeles Clippers (19-21, Last ranking: 16) –

Toronto 17. Toronto Raptors (19-22, Last ranking: 18) –

New York 18. New York Knicks (18-24, Last ranking: 19) –

Golden State 19. Golden State Warriors (19-22, Last ranking: 20) –

Indiana 20. Indiana Pacers (20-20, Last ranking: 13) –

New Orleans 21. New Orleans Hornets (16-23, Last ranking: 22) –

Charlotte 22. Charlotte Bobcats (14-25, Last ranking: 24) –

Portland 23. Portland Trail Blazers (17-25, Last ranking: 25) –

Seattle 24. Seattle SuperSonics (16-25, Last ranking: 27) –

Atlanta 25. Atlanta Hawks (13-25, Last ranking: 26) –

Sacramento 26. Sacramento Kings (15-23, Last ranking: 21) –

Milwaukee 27.

Philadelphia 28. Philadelphia 76ers (11-30, Last ranking: 29) –

Boston 29. Boston Celtics (12-27, Last ranking: 28) –

Memphis 30. Memphis Grizzlies (10-31, Last ranking: 30) –

The Top 10: Injuries

Each week another prominent player seems to be felled by injury. Which trips to the inactive list have made the biggest impact? Let's count down the season's 10 most significant injuries.

10. Kenyon Martin, Nuggets
Diagnosis:
Microfracture surgery on right knee
Status: Out remainder of season (시즌 아웃)

9. Jason Richardson, Warriors
Diagnosis:
Broken right hand suffered Dec. 30 (12
Status: Not due back until late February (2

8. Lamar Odom, Lakers
Diagnosis:
Sprained right knee suffered Dec. 12 (12
Status: Expected to return by end of January (1

7. Nenad Krstic, Nets
Diagnosis:
Tore ACL on Dec. 22 (12월 22일에 당한 ACL-십자인대- 부상)
Status: Out remainder of '06-07 after reconstructive knee surgery

6. Paul Pierce, Celtics
Diagnosis:
Sidelined since Dec. 22 with stress reaction in left foot (12
Status: Expected Jan. 19 return to practice delayed a week or more( 1주 혹은 그이상 지연되어 1월 19일에 연습에 돌아올 것으로 예상된다.)

5. Yao Ming, Rockets
Diagnosis:
Fractured bone under right knee Dec. 23 ( 12
Status: Not expected to return until All-Star break (Feb. 16-19)

4. Michael Redd, Bucks
Diagnosis:
Strained patellar tendon in left knee Jan. 5 (1
Status: Out until at least mid-February

플레이오프를 붙잡기 위해서, losing more than a quarter of your nightly offense doesn't bode well.

3. Chris Paul, Hornets
Diagnosis:
Severely sprained right ankle Dec. 26 (12
Status: Expected to return by end of January (1

2. Pau Gasol, Grizzlies
Diagnosis:
Broke right foot at FIBA World Championships in early September
Status: Missed 22 games; returned Dec. 15 (12

1. Shaquille O'Neal, Heat
Diagnosis:
Tore cartilage in left knee Nov. 12 (11
Status: Returned to practice Thursday (Jan. 11) after missing 28 games following knee surgery

The Heat were 2-2 with Shaq in the lineup, and both of those losses by blowout, so it's clear Miami wasn't running on all cylinders even with him on the floor. But it's difficult to believe the wheels would have come of the Heat bus so fast -- sending Pat Riley into self-imposed exile and James Posey and Antoine Walker into Riley-imposed exile -- if Shaq had been there to get all of his teammates all of the open shots they were accustomed to getting.
