Nuggets’ Camby Wins NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award
NEW YORK, April 27, 2007 – The NBA announced today that Marcus Camby of the Denver Nuggets has won the 2006-07 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award.

The 6-11 forward/center averaged a league-high 3.30 blocks to go along with 11.7 rpg (tied for fourth in the NBA), 11.2 ppg and a career-high 3.2 apg. Camby led the Nuggets in starts (70) and recorded a career-best 32 games with double figures in both points and rebounds. Camby also led all centers in steals (1.24 spg), while his assists were second among centers.

Since entering the NBA in 1996, Camby has been one of the game’s best shot blockers. His career average of 2.56 blocks ranks fourth among all active players and has led the league in blocks on three occasions – 1997-98, 2005-06 and 2006-07. Camby joins George Johnson, Dikembe Mutombo, Hakeem Olajuwon and Theo Ratliff with three blocked shots titles, and is just one title behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Mark Eaton for the most all-time.

Camby continues to work his way up the Nuggets’ all-time charts. He ranks second on the team’s all-time blocked shot list with 841 and is seven rebounds shy of passing Dan Schayes (3,086) for 10th on the Nuggets all-time rebounding list.

Camby received 431 points, including 70 first-place votes, from a panel of 130 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. San Antonio’s Bruce Bowen finished second with 206 points and his teammate Tim Duncan finished third with 158 points. Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote received.

Attached are the 2006-07 results and the league’s all-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award winners:

Closest Race Ever as Ellis Edges Sacramento’s Martin for Honor
NEW YORK, April 26, 2007 – Monta Ellis of the Golden State Warriors was named the winner of the 2006-07 NBA Most Improved Player Award, the NBA announced today. The annual award is presented to a player who has made a dramatic improvement from the previous season or seasons.

Ellis received a total of 352 points, including 47 first-place votes, from a panel of 129 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. The Sacramento Kings’ Kevin Martin finished second with 349 points (44 first-place votes) followed by the Utah Jazz’s Deron Williams with 101 points (13 first-place votes). Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third place vote received. This is the closest finish in the history of the award since 1990-91 when Scott Skiles of Orlando edged out Kevin Gamble of Boston by four votes

After averaging 6.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists and .415 shooting for the Warriors in 2005-06, Ellis increased his scoring by 9.7 points (16.5 ppg) – the largest increase in the NBA this season -- to go along with his averages of 3.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.71 steals. Starting 53 of the 77 games he appeared in, Ellis reached double figures in scoring 68 times, including 24 games of 20 or more points. The 6-3 guard recorded three or more steals 20 times and had at least five steals three times, including a career-high six at Seattle (March 17).

Selected by the Warriors in the second round of the 2005 NBA Draft (40th overall), Ellis was second only to Chris Paul (17.2 ppg) of the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets in scoring among players from that Draft class. Ellis also noticed a significant increase in his assist numbers as he dished five or more assists 33 times, including a career-high 13 at the Los Angeles Clippers (Feb. 24).

Third-Year Coach Guided Raptors to 20-Win Improvement Over 2005-06
NEW YORK, April 24, 2007 – Toronto Raptors head coach Sam Mitchell has been named the winner of the Red Auerbach Trophy as the NBA Coach of the Year for the 2006-07 season, the NBA announced today.

In his third season as the Raptors’ head coach, Mitchell totaled 394 points, including 49 first-place votes, from a panel of 128 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan was second with 301 points (39 first-place votes) and the Dallas Mavericks’ Avery Johnson was third with 268 points (28 first-place votes). Coaches were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote received.

Mitchell, the first coach in Raptors history to receive the honor, led the Raptors to their first Atlantic Division title and a franchise-record-tying 47 wins. The sixth head coach in franchise history, Mitchell guided the team to an NBA-best 20-game improvement (27-55) over the 2005-06 season. The Raptors were 30-7 this season when they scored 100 or more points and 38-4 when they had a better (or same) field goal percentage than their opponents.

In January, Mitchell became only the second coach in Raptors history to earn Eastern Conference Coach of the Month honors after leading the team to a 10-5 record. During the month, Toronto recorded a 7-3 mark at home and was 8-2 versus Eastern Conference opponents. January was the Raptors’ first 10-win month since January 2002 (11-5) and the fifth double-digit win month in franchise history. The Raptors finished January leading the Atlantic Division by one game with a 23-23 record and then compiled a 24-12 record to close out the rest of the season.

During his 13-year playing career, Mitchell was held in high regard around the league as a student of the game and when he finally hung up his sneakers in 2002, he went from student to teacher in his new role as an NBA coach. Following two seasons as an assistant coach, Mitchell was named the Raptors’ sixth head coach on June 29, 2004. Although the Raptors finished 33-49 in Mitchell’s first season, the campaign under his direction was highlighted by the implementation of a more up-tempo style of play that saw the team’s points per game average increase by 14.3 over the previous season, the third-highest jump in NBA history.

The Coach of the Year Award is named after legendary coach and Hall of Famer Red Auerbach who guided the Celtics to nine NBA Championships. In 1996, Auerbach was honored as one of the Top 10 Coaches in NBA History as the NBA celebrated its 50th anniversary.

NEW YORK, April 23, 2007 – Leandro Barbosa of the Phoenix Suns has been named the winner of the 2006-07 NBA Sixth Man Award, honoring the league’s top player in a reserve role, the NBA announced today.

Barbosa received 578 out of a possible 635 points, including 101 of a possible 127 first-place votes, from a panel of 127 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs finished second with 269 points and Jerry Stackhouse of the Dallas Mavericks placed third with 210 points. Each player was awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote. In order to be eligible for this award, players had to have come off the bench in more games than they started.

The fourth year guard from Brazil becomes the fourth Suns player to win NBA Sixth Man honors, joining Eddie Johnson (1988-89), Danny Manning (1997-98) and Rodney Rogers (1999-00). Since the award’s inception in 1982-83, the Boston Celtics are the only other franchise to have had a winner on even three separate occasions – Kevin McHale (1983-84 and 1984-85) and Bill Walton (1985-86).

A reserve in 62 of 80 games played this season, Barbosa averaged 18.1 points, 4.0 assists and 2.7 rebounds. He posted career highs in scoring, assists, steals (1.20), three-point field goals made (190) and minutes played (32.7). Barbosa scored 20 or more points in 33 games this season, surpassing his total from his first three seasons combined (13).

Barbosa set new individual game career highs in points (32. vs. Charlotte on March 7 and again vs. Houston on March 12), rebounds (10 vs. Philadelphia, Nov. 17), assists (12 vs. Memphis, Nov. 11) and three point field goals (seven vs. Charlotte, March 7). He also notched three consecutive double-doubles (Nov. 11 vs. Memphis, Nov. 17 vs. Philadelphia and Nov. 18 at Utah) after not notching a single one in his first 196 career games.

The final rankings
By Steve Kerr, Yahoo! Sports
April 16, 2007

Steve Kerr
Yahoo! Sports
STEVE KERR'S THREE POINTS
Player of the Week
Ben Gordon – The Bulls' explosive guard averaged 24 points a game as Chicago went 3-0 to maintain its edge over Cleveland for the second seed in the Eastern Conference. Gordon made 53 percent of his shots on the week, including 11 of his 18 three-point attempts.

Team of the Week
Golden State Warriors – Golden State's surge continued with three straight blowout victories, including a 24-point blowout of the Jazz at home, and took over the eighth spot in the West. A win over Minnesota on Sunday put the Warriors at the .500 mark for the first time since January 7 when they were 18-18.

Game of the Week
Tuesday: Golden State Warriors at Dallas Mavericks – This game has playoff implications for both teams, even though the Mavericks have already locked up the No. 1 seed in the West. Why? Because the Warriors could be Dallas' first-round opponent if they remain the eighth seed. And since Golden State has won the first two meetings of the season with the Mavs, Avery Johnson has a choice: either rest his starters and don't worry about any emotional edge the Warriors might have, or send a message by playing to win.

When Dallas and San Antonio met in the second round of last year's playoffs despite having the two best records in the NBA, the league decided to make sure that scenario never happened again. The rules committee changed the playoff seeding format, guaranteeing each division champion only a top-four seed instead of a top-three seed.

It turns out the new rule didn't go far enough.

Once again, the NBA has a problem on its hands, due to a trio of Central Division teams that were the Eastern Conference's elite. Detroit, Chicago and Cleveland were the three best teams in the East this season, but either the Bulls or Cavs will be seeded fifth when the playoffs start Saturday thanks again to the league's "new" ridiculous seeding format.

Toronto and Miami will be seeded third and fourth, respectively, based on their division titles. The result is that the East's playoff brackets are totally unbalanced, with several of the conference's best clubs all on one side.

It's time for the league to do what it should have done in the first place when it expanded to six divisions three years ago: seed every team by record, regardless of division standing. Winning a division should guarantee a playoff spot, but nothing else.

There, I got that off my chest. Here are this season's final rankings before we head to the playoffs (records and statistics are through April 15):

Dallas 1. Dallas Mavericks (66-14, Last ranking: 1) – The Mavericks solidified their status as the NBA's best team with their 91-86 victory over San Antonio on Sunday. Now the hard part begins: trying to get back to the NBA finals.

Phoenix 2. Phoenix Suns (61-19, Last ranking: 3) – The Suns have won five in a row since a loss to the Spurs last week, and they've secured the No. 2 seed in the West in the process.

San Antonio 3. San Antonio Spurs (58-22, Last ranking: 2) – As well as the Spurs have played in the second half of the season, their early-season struggles may come back to haunt them. The three seed means a first-round matchup with red-hot Denver and no home court against either Phoenix or Dallas in later rounds.

Detroit 4. Detroit Pistons (51-29, Last ranking: 4) – The Pistons head to the playoffs as the favorites in the East, but a second-round matchup with either Miami or Cleveland looms.

Houston 5. Houston Rockets (51-29, Last ranking: 6) – Tracy McGrady is still looking for his first playoff series victory, and he looks ready. He's averaged 31 points during Houston's four-game win streak.

Chicago 6. Chicago Bulls (49-32, Last ranking: 7) – The Bulls are as stingy as ever when it comes to giving up points. A rout of Washington on Sunday was fueled by a smothering defense that held the Wizards to 34-percent shooting.

Cleveland 7. Cleveland Cavaliers (48-32, Last ranking: 8) – The Cavs are still hoping the Bulls slip and fall to New Jersey Wednesday. If not, they're looking at the fifth seed and a meeting with the Heat in the first found.

Toronto 8. Toronto Raptors (47-33, Last ranking: 9) – The Raptors are hoping to get Andrea Bargnani back for the playoffs.

Miami 9. Miami Heat (44-36, Last ranking: 11) – Dwyane Wade's numbers since his return? Four games, 16 points per game, 24-for-54 shooting.

Denver 10. Denver Nuggets (43-37, Last ranking: 10) – The Nuggets' eight-game winning streak was snapped in Memphis, but not before Denver secured the sixth seed and a date with the Spurs in the first round.

Utah 11. Utah Jazz (49-31, Last ranking: 5) – The Jazz will limp into their first-round series with Houston, having lost seven of their last nine games.

Golden State 12. Golden State Warriors (40-40, Last ranking: 14) – The Warriors' late-season playoff push has been fueled by a reenergized Jason Richardson, who is part of an ultra small lineup that is giving opponents fits.

L.A. Clippers 13. Los Angeles Clippers (39-41, Last ranking: 12) – A costly loss to Sacramento on Sunday – at home, no less – has left the Clips in a position where they need help to make the playoffs.

L.A. Lakers 14. Los Angeles Lakers (41-40, Last ranking: 13) – What happened to that once-promising season? The Lakers need to beat Sacramento on Tuesday just to finish above .500.

New Jersey 15. New Jersey Nets (39-41, Last ranking: 16) – Blowouts at the hands of Chicago and Cleveland don't bode well for the Nets' playoff chances: They're likely to play one of them in the first round.

Washington 16. Washington Wizards (40-40, Last ranking: 17) – With no Gilbert Arenas or Caron Butler, the Wizards are the team everyone in the East wants to play in the first round. It looks like Toronto will have the honor.

Orlando 17. Orlando Magic (38-42, Last ranking: 15) – The Magic are in the playoffs, but don't expect to see them hang around long.

New Orleans 18. New Orleans Hornets (37-43, Last ranking: 18) – Give the Hornets credit. They hung around the playoff chase for a long time despite numerous injuries.

Indiana 19. Indiana Pacers (35-45, Last ranking: 19) – After losing 21 of their last 27 games, the Pacers will miss the playoffs for the first time in 10 years.

Philadelphia 20. Philadelphia 76ers (34-46, Last ranking: 20) – Who could have predicted the Sixers would win 29 of 57 games since trading Allen Iverson? The only problem is that their draft position, barring a lottery miracle, got considerably lower.

Sacramento 21. Sacramento Kings (33-47, Last ranking: 26) – The Kings may be in for a rebuilding job after missing the playoffs for the first time in nine years.

Charlotte 22. Charlotte Bobcats (33-48, Last ranking: 23) – The Bobcats won seven of their last 10 games and have some hope for next season. Plenty of cap room, a lottery pick … things are looking up.

Portland 23. Portland Trail Blazers (32-48, Last ranking: 24) – Jarrett Jack scored 25 points and handed out five assists in a win over Seattle. He's trying to prove he's the Blazers' point guard of the future.

New York 24. New York Knicks (32-48, Last ranking: 22) – As the Knicks continue to tumble down the standings, the Bulls' draft choice gets higher and higher.

Minnesota 25. Minnesota Timberwolves (32-48, Last ranking: 21) – The Wolves shelved Kevin Garnett and made sure they hung onto their first-round draft pick, which would have gone to the Clippers if it hadn't been in the top 10.

Seattle 26. Seattle SuperSonics (31-50, Last ranking: 25) – Is this the last time we'll call the Sonics the Seattle Sonics? Let's hope not.

Atlanta 27. Atlanta Hawks (29-51, Last ranking: 27) – Is there anyone left on the roster to play the final week?

Milwaukee 28. Milwaukee Bucks (27-53, Last ranking: 28) – The Bucks-Hawks matchup on Monday figures to be a barnburner. Don't miss it.

Boston 29. Boston Celtics (23-57, Last ranking: 29) – The Celtics are hoping that either Kevin Durant or Greg Oden "comes walking through that door" in June.

Memphis 30. Memphis Grizzlies (20-60, Last ranking: 30) – Come on, pingpong balls!

Beware of the Nuggets
By Steve Kerr, Yahoo! Sports

STEVE KERR'S THREE POINTS
Team of the Week
Denver Nuggets – Denver not only beat the best team in the NBA last week – Dallas – but also handled two of its playoff-seeking counterparts, the Lakers and Clippers. Throw in a victory over Sacramento, and the Nuggets won all four games to move closer to a playoff berth. Carmelo Anthony averaged 27 points per game during the stretch and is playing his best basketball since early in the season.

Stat of the Week
2 – That's how many three-pointers Ruben Patterson and Eddy Curry had combined for the season before each hit one in the final second of the New York Knicks' overtime win over the Milwaukee Bucks. Patterson banked in his effort from the wing with 0.9 seconds left in regulation to put the Bucks up 102-99, only to be overshadowed when Curry tied the game with a three from the corner.

Game of the Week
Thursday: Los Angeles Clippers vs. Los Angeles Lakers – The battle for L.A. isn't quite as attractive as it was a year ago when both teams were really good. Still, there's always drama when these two clubs meet at Staples Center, and this game has playoff implications for both teams.

Ask any of the West's top teams which club it most wants to avoid in the first round of the playoffs, and the answer most likely would be Denver.

The Nuggets finally are healthy and clicking, and despite a difficult schedule George Karl's team has rattled off five straight wins to squeeze past the two L.A. teams to reach the No. 6 slot in the West.

It appears that the Allen Iverson/Carmelo Anthony combination finally is working for Denver, which complements the scoring punch of its All-Star tandem with a couple of shot-blocking big men in Nene and Marcus Camby.

The Nuggets' late-season surge has included wins over Phoenix and Dallas, and they'll conclude their regular season with a game against the Spurs next week. Beating any one of those three teams in a playoff series would be a major accomplishment, but with the way Denver is finally playing, it's not out of the question.

More importantly, the Nuggets' great week has pushed them back into the Yahoo! Sports top 10 this week. I'm sure, Karl and A.I. are thrilled at the news.

Here's a look at the rankings (records and statistics are through April 8):

Dallas 1. Dallas Mavericks (63-13, Last ranking: 1) –

San Antonio 2.
San Antonio Spurs (55-21, Last ranking: 3) –

Phoenix 3.
Phoenix Suns (58-19, Last ranking: 2) –

Detroit 4.
Detroit Pistons (49-27, Last ranking: 5) –

Utah 5.
Utah Jazz (48-28, Last ranking: 4) –

Houston 6.
Houston Rockets (48-29, Last ranking: 4) –

Chicago 7. Chicago Bulls (46-32, Last ranking: 8) –

Cleveland 8. Cleveland Cavaliers (46-32, Last ranking: 7) –

Toronto 9. Toronto Raptors (44-33, Last ranking: 9) –

Denver 10. Denver Nuggets (40-36, Last ranking: 14) –

Miami 11. Miami Heat (42-35, Last ranking: 11) –

L.A. Clippers 12. Los Angeles Clippers (37-38, Last ranking: 13) –

L.A. Lakers 13. Los Angeles Lakers (40-37, Last ranking: 10) –

Golden State 14. Golden State Warriors (37-40, Last ranking: 15) – "Stayin' alive, stayin' alive."

Orlando 15. Orlando Magic (35-41, Last ranking: 16) –

New Jersey 16. New Jersey Nets (36-40, Last ranking: 17) –

Washington 17. Washington Wizards (39-37, Last ranking: 12) –

New Orleans 18. New Orleans Hornets (36-41, Last ranking: 18) -

Indiana 19. Indiana Pacers (34-42, Last ranking: 20) –

Philadelphia 20. Philadelphia 76ers (31-45, Last ranking: 22) –

Minnesota 21. I have nothing to say about this team.

New York 22. New York Knicks (32-44, Last ranking: 21) –

Charlotte 23. Charlotte Bobcats (31-47, Last ranking: 25) –

Portland 24.

Seattle 25. Seattle SuperSonics (31-46, Last ranking: 23) –

Sacramento 26. Sacramento Kings (31-45, Last ranking: 24) –

Atlanta 27. Atlanta Hawks (28-49, Last ranking: 27) –

Milwaukee 28.
Milwaukee Bucks (26-50, Last ranking: 28) – 1

Boston 29. Boston Celtics (23-53, Last ranking: 29) –

Memphis 30. Memphis Grizzlies (19-59, Last ranking: 30) –
