McGrady building MVP case heading into All-Star Game

HOUSTON -- Before catching a flight to Las Vegas Thursday night, Tracy McGrady vowed to do something big at this weekend's NBA All-Star Game festivities.

Nope. McGrady actually had something bigger in mind.
아니다. 티맥은 사실 더 큰 계획을 가지고 있다.
"I'm going to have Yao (Ming) over at my party," said McGrady, who is hosting an adidas party at MGM Grand. "I'm going to try to get him dancing."

He might as well. McGrady has, after all, done everything else leading up to the All-Star break this season.

The Rockets' star, who will be making his seventh All-Star appearance as a starter for the Western Conference Sunday night in Sin City, has thrust himself into the MVP conversation by carrying his team since Yao fractured his right tibia on Dec. 23. Houston (33-19) has the fifth best record in the NBA, trailing the Utah Jazz by two games and the San Antonio Spurs by a game for third place in the West.
올해로 7번째로 올스타전에 참가하는 티맥은 일요일 Sin City에서의 올스타전 서부 팀 주전 선수로 선정되었다. 또한 12월 23일 야오의 부상 이후로 팀을 잘 이끌어 MVP 후보로도 언급되고 있다. 리그에서 5번째로 높은 승률을 기록하고 있는 휴스턴(33승 19패)는 서부 3위 자리를 차지하기 위해서 샌안토니오를 한게임차 유타 재즈를 2게임차로 바짝 추격하고 있다.
Yao, an All-Star starter who won't play Sunday because of injury, was having an MVP-type start before leaving the lineup, but the Rockets have managed to remain afloat with a 17-8 record in his absence. McGrady has been largely responsible for that, finding ways to get his teammates involved in the offense with his deft passing and taking over games down the stretch with his clutch shooting.

Since the Rockets center has been out, McGrady has averaged an eye-popping 27 points and 5.9 assists per game. His clip of 6.1 assists this season is a career best.

The numbers are earning McGrady early MVP consideration.

"He's done a great job for the most part carrying us during this time when Yao has been out," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "He's consistently coming up with enough shot-making and play-making balance to keep us afloat."

McGrady has earned such praise despite dealing with his own doubts about his game through the first two months of the season.

After being slowed with back spasms throughout the 2005-06 season, the Rockets star struggled to locate his shooting touch and didn't seem to have the explosiveness that once made him one of the game's most feared scorers in the early going of this season. He ended up missing seven games in December with back spasms, resurfacing fears that his back could go out at any given moment.
05-06 시즌 등 경련으로 고생한 티맥은 이번 시즌 초반에도 슛감을 찾는 데 어려워 했고, 가장 위협적인 스코어러중 하나로 남게한 폭발력도 보여주지 못했다. 결국 다시 등 경련이 재발하면서 12월에 7게임을 결장하게 되었고, 티맥의 등은 시한폭탄과도 같았다.
Things took a dramatic turn after McGrady visited specialist John Patterson in Waco. McGrady was in bad shape when he made the trip, but the one visit improved his ailing back. McGrady's back pain disappeared and he regained confidence attacking the basket without fear. His enthusiasm returned.
그런 티맥은 Waco에 있는 전문가 존 패터슨을 방문하면서 극적인 전환을 맞이하였다. 정말 상태가 안좋았지만, 단 한번의 방문으로 티맥의 등은 호전되었다. 등 경련에 따른 고통이 사라졌고, 두려움없이 농구를 할 수 있는 자신감을 얻었다. 티맥의 열정이 돌아온 것이었다.
So has his game.
"I was in bad shape when I saw (Patterson)," said McGrady, who makes monthly visits to the specialist. "I could barely stand straight up. I walked out of there feeling pretty good. I'm feeling good and playing free. I'm just doing what I should be doing."

That's putting the Rockets on his back.
With Yao out of the lineup, the Rockets lost their leading scorer and one of the few offensive players on the roster that can consistently draw double teams for Houston's spot shooters to get open looks. McGrady has solved that problem by slashing to bucket with abandon, forcing opposing defenses to make a choice: Do you want him to keep driving or do you want to take a chance of being burned by one of Houston's consistent three point shooters?

McGrady is clearly comfortable with either option, showing even in the late stages of a game that he's willing to defer to his teammates when he's doubled.

"We know the ball is coming to us every time he gets double-teamed," said Rockets guard Luther Head, who is seventh in the NBA in three-point shooting at 44.3 percent. "He's great. I don't know how he sees what he sees. I used to be surprised that he could find me when I'm on the opposite end of the court, but now I know it's coming."

Mavericks coach Avery Johnson has clearly noticed how effective McGrady has been in getting his teammates involved, so much so that he considers the Rockets guard among the leaders for the MVP award.
매버릭스 감독인 에이버리 존슨은 티맥이 팀동료들을 얼마나 효과적으로 이끌고 있는 지에 대해, 그리고 그만큼 MVP후보로 꼽히기에 충분하다고 분명히 말했다.
"He's again showing all of you what he's capable of doing," Johnson said. "He's passing the ball. He's competing hard on defense. He's making the in-between shot. He's making the long shot. He's getting to the free throw line. He's really setting up their team. He's like a waiter."

During Thursday's setback to the Mavericks, McGrady was serenaded with chants of "M-V-P" by a sellout crowd of 18,270 inside Toyota Center.

McGrady is appreciative of the MVP talk after everything that he has dealt with over the past two seasons, but he isn't expecting to earn the award at the end of the season.
티맥은 지난 2년간의 부진과 부상에도 MVP 언급이 나오고 있는 것에 감사히 여기고 있다. 하지만 실제로 MVP를 기대하고 있진 않다.
He doesn't believe he'll get much consideration even if the Rockets are able to pass San Antonio in the standings and position themselves among the top half of the conference. He believes Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki is the front runner for the honor.
만약 휴스턴이 샌안토니오를 앞서서 상위 시드를 따낸다하더라도 티맥은 자신이 MVP를 받으리라 생각지는 않는다. 바로 댈러스의 덕 노비츠키가 유력하다고 생각한다.
"It's an honor, but I have no chance of winning it," McGrady said. "It might be Dirk's year. I think they really base it off who really starts off well. I didn't start out of the gates well because I wasn't as healthy as I wanted to be and it took me a while to get back in a groove. I don't think I'm deserving of it. I'm playing great and my team is playing well, but I definitely wouldn't want to get it over a guy like Dirk with the best team in the league."

He'll settle for carrying the Rockets back to the playoffs.
티맥은 로켓츠를 다시 플레이오프 무대에 올려놓을 것이다.
