Wells opts for return to Rockets over free agency

This time instead of running out of free agent options, Bonzi Wells did not need them.

Wells, on a mission to do what he did not last season, has opted to forgo another try at free agency he had planned to instead return to the Rockets next season, his agent Bill Duffy said Saturday.

Wells had until Monday to reach a decision but Duffy said the paperwork had been completed and sent on Saturday to opt into his current contract, worth $2.8 million.

Bonzi was adamant he wanted to return to Houston, Duffy said.

"I believe he will have his best year. He's healthy. He's committed to being in the best shape of his career. He's on a mission."

Wells could have become a free agent and signed with the Rockets again, but Duffy said that the Rockets need to use their mid-level exception to fill other roster spots led to Wells decision to return to the Rockets with the contract he signed in October.

"I made him understand they wanted him back but they had other concerns and wanted to maintain their flexibility with their mid-level exception," Duffy said.

"He's excited to play for a coach (Rick Adelman) he has recent success with. He loves the city, loves the team. He felt it was a championship-caliber play team. He was extremely frustrated to not be part of the playoff run because he felt he could have contributed."

After missing most of training camp and the preseason with a variety of physical ailments and personal absences, Wells did not get a spot in the rotation until Dec. 12. He still struggled to stay healthy, twice going out with back injuries.

After his best performance of the season Feb. 26, he went out briefly with a foot condition, and then was placed on the inactive list for most of the remainder of the season. He returned to the court for two games late in the season, but left the team April 9 in Seattle with five games left.

He averaged 7.8 points and 4.3 rebounds in 28 games, making 41.1 percent of his shots and 14.3 percent of his 3-pointers.

"Between this and the Mike James (acquisition), good things are happening there," said Duffy, who also represents James, Yao Ming and free-agent forward Chuck Hayes. "Bonzi is healthy and Mike is ready to roll. They're going to be interesting right now."

Yao as playmaker

아델만은 티맥에 대해서도, 티맥 자신이 공격의 방아쇠가 되기보다는 letting more of the offense come to him하는 것으로 다르게 티맥을 활용할거라고 말했다.

"They do have miles on them.

Coach wants Wells back

Still undecided

As much as Bonzi Wells has said about his preference to return to the Rockets, he has not said that he would not opt out of his contract, as he always had planned.

Wells' agent, Billy Duffy, said he and Wells have not reached a decision about whether Wells will become a free agent, but would meet with Rockets officials at the NBA predraft camp beginning Tuesday in Orlando to see what the team has in mind.

Unless he is determined to be back with the Rockets, there seems little for Wells to lose financially in becoming a free agent. The second year of his contract that he never expected to consider is worth $2.3 million. Duffy, who was hired after most of last summer's options dried up, never got a chance to find Wells a good fit and good contract. Even coming off a poor season, Wells would seem certain to find at least as good a deal as he has in his Rockets contract.

Duffy can be sure how new Rockets coach Rick Adelman feels about bringing Wells back; he will have to find out where another free agent, Chuck Hayes, fits. Adelman said he would seek more offensive versatility, which does not sound like Hayes. But if he finds it, it might allow Hayes to come back to do what he does.

"Chuck is the kind of guy any coach wants around, either as a starter or off the bench," Duffy said. "He's a low-maintenance, high-energy guy and an overachiever."

But with both, it might depend what the Rockets can get done before dealing with their own free agents, that determines what they can bring back.

With some rumors floating around today about a shoulder surgery for Yao Ming (thanks to Nar for raising the question here) I traded a few emails with John Huizinga, Yao's agent.

No surgery.

He was very clear. No surgery has been done (Yao worked out at Toyota Center on Wednesday.) None is scheduled. None is planned.

He said Yao has had several exams looking into the discomfort he has had in certain movements, but that none have offered a recommendation that Yao have surgery. He even added that looking ahead, he doesn't expect Yao to undergo surgery.

"Based on what has been uncovered so far," he said, "I don't expect Yao to have any off-season surgery."

It's Dream time for Yao at workouts with Olajuwon

His voice in Yao Ming's ear, Hakeem Olajuwon planted a forearm in the small of Yao's back, and one generation of Rockets royalty shoved the next toward something far greater than a different spot on the Toyota Center floor.

Beneath the championship banners he brought and the No. 34 no Rockets player will wear again, Olajuwon demonstrated and lectured, shared and inspired.

For a little more than an hour Tuesday, the greatest of all Rockets players put the latest in the team's lineage of star centers in his classroom, showing jump hooks and "Jack Sikma" jumpers, spin moves and drop steps, all to make Yao the dominant force of Olajuwon's vision.

"How do you dominate the game?" Olajuwon asked as he and Yao moved from the left block to the right. "You're hardworking. You have the conditioning. You have the shot. You have everything. Now, you need to dominate."

Olajuwon spoke of Yao using his jump hook as his basic move.

"To the middle. No. More balance. To here. Balance. Balance. If you can get the jump hook any time, it's all day. All day."

Olajuwon showed him his spin toward the baseline.

"No. Don't spin out. Spin in. All right. Nice move."

He showed Yao a jump shot stepping toward the defender.

"That's (former Sonics star) Jack Sikma. No. No. You're bringing it down to the little guy. Where's your elbow? This should be your move. That's your move. Who's going to stop that? That's a go-to move. You feel comfortable. Balance. Balance. Balance. Balance. All day."

With everything Olajuwon demonstrated, fundamentals direct from the lessons of Guy Lewis, Moses Malone and Carroll Dawson, the idea was to make Yao dominate.

"You can dominate," Olajuwon, 7-0, said, nodding toward the banner honoring him for his NBA-record 3,830 blocked shots. "You can get all new records. Do you believe that? You should.

"You should be scoring at will. You should be scoring easy. Easy. They are in trouble on defense. They are in trouble on offense. They have no answer. No answer."

After the time on the court with Olajuwon, Yao could not argue.

"For a young player, not many get this chance," Yao, 26, said. "I'm the honored one of those. Next time, I would love to have more time to be (taught) by him.

"The mentality is the biggest difference between him and me right now. I hope, not far in the future, I can be the same thing. Like him."

More in the works

Yao's agent, John Huizinga, said he has begun trying to schedule more sessions in which Yao can work with Olajuwon. That might depend on whether Yao has a procedure to remove a toenail. He has several appointments this week to determine whether to undergo that minor surgery.

Olajuwon, 44, said he enjoyed working with Yao so much that he'd be happy to do it again.

"It was so much fun to work with a great player like him," Olajuwon said. "He has so much potential. It's scary to think what he can really do. By just adding little things to his game, he can raise his level.

"The important thing for him because he is playing so well already is just how to dominate the game. He has all the advantages, and he's so skilled. (There are) little things he can do to make him be a dominant player consistently. It's scary to see what he can do in the future."

There were light moments in the workout.

While working on a move that is part of Yao's repertoire and on which he looked much more adept than on some of Olajuwon's spins, Olajuwon pointed to his blocked shots banner and said: "I'm a shot-blocker. And I'm discouraged."

On a move toward the middle, when Yao, 7-6, did not raise an elbow high enough to protect the ball, Olajuwon smacked Yao's elbow and said, "Use these."

"I know," Yao said. "On this point, Dikembe (Mutombo) is better than you."

Trying out the moves

Yao is scheduled to return to China early next month for a vacation and to begin training with the Chinese national team. He could play in one or two exhibition tournaments, he said, and try some of the moves Olajuwon showed him.

"Most of his moves are easy to learn, easy to watch on TV," Yao said. "But when you do that, with contact on your body, that's totally different. So I need to do what he's going to teach me every day, a couple hundred times a day, make myself used to it. After that, I need to play some live games, maybe use it in a national team game. And then, back to the season. I hope I can get a lot improved.

"The biggest difference between him and me is the mentality. He's got two championship rings in a row. I'm not saying I found out today, but I can hear very strongly from him, 'You are the biggest player on the court. You need to go in and change the game. You need to be dominant.' He repeated that time and time again.

"I feel a little bit different. I feel his heart."

For all that they share and shared Tuesday, that was perhaps the most valuable thing Olajuwon could give Yao.

Bonzie Wells Sets the Record Straight

HOUSTON -- In his first interview since Bonzi Wells prematurely ended his season with the Rockets April 9, Wells told FOX 26 Sports he has no hard feelings toward former Rockets head coach Jeff Van Gundy. He says he is thrilled at the expected hiring of Rick Adelman as the Rockets new head coach and he says if the business side of things can be worked out he would like to return to the Rockets.

Wells left the Rockets with five games to go in the regular season because he indicated at the time he felt like he was hurting team chemistry. In the interview with FOX 26 Wells sets the record straight about his relationship with Van Gundy.

"I felt like we had a good team and I thought I was the missing link. I still do. Coach (Van Gundy) didn't see it that way. He thought he was going the right way. Coach Van Gundy didn't think I fit in. He came to me as a man and told me that. I looked into his eyes and I could see that he hurt for me. I respected that. He told me that I could ask to be waived and I told him I didn't want to be anywhere else. I hated the way it ended because I really started to appreciate him, " Wells said.

Van Gundy is not suprised at Wells comments about him.

"Perception and reality are often very different. I never thought it was personal between Bonzi and I. I think it's great for Bonzi with Rick coming in because he has a proven history with him. I think it could work out great, " Van Gundy said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.

Wells believes the Rockets expected hiring of Rick Adelman is almost like divine intervention.

"I thought it was like God sent him here for me. Rick Adelman is a great coach. He's the best coach I have ever had. He really knows how to relate to his players. He does a great job of letting guys be themselves, " Wells said.

Wells played for Adelman for one year when both were in Sacramento.

"I love coach Adelman. With Coach Adelman coming here I really don't want to be anywhere else," Wells said.

However there is a business side to all of this. Before last season Wells signed a two year contract with the Rockets with the right to opt out after year one. The total value of the contract is about $4.4 million.

"I have a decision to make and so do they. I wanted to be here even if Jeff Van Gundy was going to be here. It's still early. I think they need a guy like me," Wells said.

Wells doesn't rule out opting out and then re-signing with Houston.

Mailbag: Rockets nail down rotation for playoff push

Rockets.com's Damien Pierce opens his mailbag to answer fans' questions

Damien Pierce
Rockets.com Staff Writer

Rockets.com beat writer Damien Pierce opens up his mailbag each week to answer fans' questions.

So ask Pierce anything about the Rockets or the NBA. He'll come up with an answer or an answer that sounds right. His answers, of course, are entirely his own opinion.

Pierce will be checking his mail again on April 20, so send in your questions.

Let's get to your questions ...

What do you expect the Rockets' rotation to look like in the playoffs?
-- Mark Smith, Houston

--
Mark Smith, Houston

Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy was exploring different lineup options last week, but I suspect that you'll see the same eight-man rotation in the playoffs that you've seen over much of the past month.

So, in other words, Luther Head, Dikembe Mutombo and Juwan Howard will be the options off the bench. Mutombo will probably play about 10 minutes to give Yao a breather, but Head and Howard will get minutes based on what the team needs down the stretch of games. Head tends to get playing time in crunch time thanks to his clutch three-point shooting and Howard's minutes will fluctuate based on whether Van Gundy wants more rebounding (Chuck Hayes) or more offense (Howard).

I also expect to see more of Houston's two stars. Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming will be logging more minutes in the postseason, although Yao will have to avoid foul trouble to stay on the floor. McGrady will probably be hovering around the 40-minute mark throughout the playoffs.

With that said, I suspect some fans will question this short bench.

Don't you think Coach Van Gundy needs a deeper rotation for the playoffs to rest his starters? The Mavs and Suns have deep benches.
-- David James, Houston

--
David James, Houston

Who called that one? Unfortunately David, I'm not with you on this one. The Rockets shouldn't extend their bench for the sake of trotting out as many players as other teams and I'd even argue that those other teams are going to shorten their benches as well for the postseason.

Do you think Avery Johnson is going to decrease Dirk Nowitzki's minutes in the playoffs to get a ninth guy off the bench? Probably not. And, I'd like to point out that the Suns are running eight guys these days. During Wednesday's win over Seattle, the Suns only had three players log significant minutes off the bench. Sure, three additional guys ended up playing two minutes each at the end of the game. But that wasn't part of Phoenix's primary rotation.

With all that said, here's what really matters: The Rockets have, for the most part, played their best with an eight-man rotation. That might very well be because those guys at the end of the bench didn't get more playing time earlier in the season, but even if that's the case, that's not a reason to extend their minutes right now, heading in the playoffs.

As for resting starters, Van Gundy will be playing his primary options the same amount of time whether he has a bench that goes three deep or six deep. So that, to me, is really a non-issue.

The bottom line is the Rockets are be going with a rotation that has shown the best results over the course of the season.

What the heck happened with Bonzi Wells and is the situation a distraction for the team?
-- Jorge Lopez, Houston

--
Jorge Lopez, Houston

Frankly, I would just be speculating to come up with answer. Here's all you really need to know: Bonzi Wells was placed on the inactive list after missing Monday's game at Seattle and he isn't expected to activated for the remainder of the season.

As for the second half of your question, I don't think the situation has been a distraction. The issue was handled fairly quickly and the team appears focused on making a playoff push.

What happened to Steve Novak? In the beginning of the season, he was making three pointers as if it were no problem. I haven't seen him play in a long time.

-- Sadiq Amir, Houston

--
Sadiq Amir, Houston

I'm happy to report that Steve Novak is still a heck of a shooter. However, the rookie is not in the rotation because he's still improving his strength and developing his defensive skills.

How is Novak handling the situation? Glad you asked. I actually talked with him about how he was handling the lack of minutes about two weeks ago in Los Angeles. He said that he'd obvioulsy like to be playing, but he understands that he's got veterans playing in front of him and that he has to improve in certain areas. He said that he's added about 10 pounds to his 230-pound frame since the season opener.

There's no queston that Novak is a skilled shooter. He could earn himself some playing time next season.

Do you think that Yao Ming needs to work on his strength and ability to get the ball in the post? He recently had major problems getting the ball against the Warriors.
-- Fred Tavalaian, Houston

-- Fred Tavalaian, Houston

I'll suggest to Yao that he should start lifting weights. OK, I'm kidding. Since I started covering the Rockets, I haven't seen another guy work harder than Yao. He's typically in the weight room after most games, even after logging 30-plus minutes on the hardwood.

In other words, I wouldn't equate his inability to get touches against Golden State on April 4 to his lack of strength. The Warriors were certainly physical with him, but what limited Yao's inside looks was the fact that three defenders were hovering around him. He couldn't get the ball inside even when he reached his spot because the Rockets' guards couldn't find an opening in the defense.

What would have opened things up for Yao is better shooting and more efficient passing. The Warriors dared Houston's collection of perimeter players to beat them. And on that night, they didn't. They shot 41.3 percent, made 15 of 37 three-point attempts and had 24 turnovers.

We can't get home-court advantage because the Jazz won their division. So why do they keep saying we can? Under the new rules, a division winner will not be seeded any lower than fourth. The new rules only assure that the two best teams are seeded No. 1 and No. 2 so they can face each other in the conference finals. If I'm wrong, please clear that up for me. Here are the rules: http://www.nba.com/features/seedingprimer07.html
-- Jason, Humble

: http://www.nba.com/features/seedingprimer07.html
-- Jason, Humble

I'd suggest reading the rules that you sent to me. Here's the part that you might find interesting: Home-court advantage for any series is determined by record, not seed. So, it's possible that the 5 seed could have home-court advantage over the 4, or that the 6 seed could have home-court advantage over the 3.

Mailbag: Will McGrady be healthy for the playoffs?

Rockets.com's Damien Pierce opens his mailbag to answer fans' questions

Damien Pierce
Rockets.com Staff Writer

Rockets.com beat writer Damien Pierce opens up his mailbag each week to answer fans' questions.

So ask Pierce anything about the Rockets or the NBA. He'll come up with an answer or an answer that sounds right. His answers, of course, are entirely his own opinion.

Pierce will be checking his mail again on April 13, so send in your questions.

Let's get to your questions ...

Do you think Tracy McGrady's back is going to continue being a problem through the playoffs?
-- James Gibbons, Houston

--
James Gibbons, Houston

The Mailbag's inbox was, unsurprisingly, stuffed with questions this week regarding Tracy McGrady's back injury.

My advice: Don't panic.

McGrady certainly isn't. The seven-time All-Star listed himself as questionable for Friday's game against Portland, but he added that he isn't worried about his latest back episode because he's dealing with stiffness, not spasms. McGrady said that he would have tried to play through the pain if the Rockets were already in the middle of the playoffs, but erred on the side of caution on Wednesday since he couldn't get loose and the Rockets are already in the playoffs. That's encouraging.

McGrady, of course, has already dealt with some stiffness this season. Back on Jan. 17, the Rockets star skipped the team's game against Phoenix because he stiffened up. How did he recover from that? He returned to play 33 games and carried the Rockets offense without Yao Ming.

If that episode is like the one that he experienced on Wednesday, McGrady should be fine for the playoffs.

Do the Rockets still have a realistic chance of catching the Jazz for home-court advantage in the West
? And how important is home-court advantage?
-- Jaime Rojas, Houston

--
Jaime Rojas, Houston

The Rockets certainly need some help to catch the Utah Jazz, but it's not impossible.

With seven games remaining in the regular season, the Rockets have to make up three games on the Jazz in the loss column. That's because Utah is two games in front of them in that category and they own the tiebreaker over the Rockets by virtue of a better conference record.

good news for those of you dreaming of seeing Game 1 in Houston is that the Rockets have a slightly softer remaining slate than Utah. They have two games left against teams with a winning record (Utah has four plus a matchup against a Golden State team still in playoff contention) and one of those is against the Jazz. Phoenix, Houston's other remaining opponent with a winning record, could very well end up resting the majority of its lineup in a late season game that probably won't impact the Suns' standing in the West.

Beyond that, the Jazz haven't been playing their best basketball of late. They're just 5-5 in their past 10 games.

In other words, the Rockets have a chance if they can get on a roll. They just don't have any room for error at this point.

And yes, home court advantage is important. Since the league stretched the first round to seven games in 2003, the team with home court advantage has a 28-4 record. The Rockets obviously have the potential to buck that trend, but they'll have to be playing at a high level to get it done. Really, the most important thing for the Rockets is being on a roll heading into the playoffs.

Don’t you think we should see Bonzi Wells now?  It’s really frustrating to me that he’s not playing and I’m just a fan. Does Jeff Van Gundy remember what he did against the Spurs in the playoffs last season? He didn’t do it for one game, it was the whole series. I think Utah is very similar to San Antonio in terms of their rugged styles. Bonzi would really help against Utah in the playoffs. I'm sure Jeff knows that.  What’s your take?

-- Reginald Eaten, Houston

--
Reginald Eaten, Houston

Well, you'll be happy to know that Bonzi Wells will be activated for Friday's game against Portland. Jeff Van Gundy said after Friday's shootaround that he's going to try to work Wells back into the rotation. We'll see how it goes.

I saw that Kirk Snyder has had some minutes in the past couple of games. Is Kirk's presence for defense or offense? What does he have that can help the Rockets win over the Jazz in the playoffs?
-- Sadiq Amir, Houston

-- Sadiq Amir, Houston

Kirk Snyder has been contributing steady minutes since March 18, but his time could be reduced some in the playoffs since Tracy McGrady will likely be playing more minutes.

In any case, Snyder brings athleticism to both ends of the floor. He's a slasher who can attack the bucket and he's quick enough to defend some of the league's more fleet-footed perimeter players.

Could you send me an autographed team basketball?
-- Robert Smith , Houston

-- Robert Smith , Houston

Unfortunately, the Mailbag doesn't have an outbox.

With Kobe Bryant making history by scoring 50 points four times in a row, I asked myself: What is wrong with T-Mac? Since he came to Houston, he has never reached this plateau. Don't you think that Houston will need these Kobe-like performances from T-Mac to get rid of a team like Phoenix in playoffs?
-- Hanania Djibom, Ghana, Africa

-- Hanania Djibom, Ghana, Africa

I'm still relatively new at this mailbag thing, but I'm not sure you can fault McGrady for not doing something that only four people in the history of the NBA have done. That's me, though.

Kobe Bryant is unquestionably the league's elite scorer and he's doing things that a lot of guys haven't done in the NBA. But I don't think that lessens what other players are doing.

Something else to consider: McGrady isn't ever going to take 44 shots like Bryant did against the Rockets earlier this season. He's going to share the scoring load with Yao Ming and get other guys involved by drawing the defense in the paint and kicking out to the open man.

Does McGrady need to be great in the playoffs for his team to be successful? Absolutely. But there are different ways to be great.

Mailbag: McGrady pushing for first playoff series win

Rockets.com beat writer Damien Pierce opens up his mailbag each week to answer fans' questions.

So ask Pierce anything about the NBA or the Rockets. He’ll come up with an answer or an answer that sounds right. His answers, of course, are entirely his own opinion.

What is on everyone's mind this week? The playoffs ... still.

Pierce will be checking his mail again on March 30, so send in your questions.

T-Mac is clearly one of the best players in the NBA today, but he has never won the big one or even made it pass the first round in the playoffs. Why not?
-- Jermaine Green

--
Jermaine Green

Tracy McGrady has never won a playoff series and I’m sure that’s going to be the storyline when the Rockets open the playoffs. But in fairness to McGrady, he’s never had home-court advantage in the postseason. That, of course, means he's never actually been on a team favored to get past the first round.

He could get a boost this season if the Rockets can chase down the Utah Jazz for that fourth spot
and earn home-court advantage in the opening round of the playoffs. But even if he doesn't, McGrady's chances of winning a playoff series appear to be significantly better this season than they've been in the past.

Not only is he still in his prime, but he's never been on a better team. He's got a superstar sidekick, Yao Ming, playing alongside him and Houston's roster is deeper than its been since he arrived in town.

But the most promising sign for McGrady is this: He isn't worried about getting past round one just to get that asterisk off his resume. McGrady is actually more concerned with seeing how deep the Rockets can go in the playoffs.

If he's thinking that way, he's obviously in a better situation than he's ever been in during his career.

Why would the Rockets want to catch San Antonio? Doing so would put you up against either the Lakers or Nuggets. Both teams have had injury problems and both have playoff experience. I expect the Lakers to get hot once Luke Walton and Lamar Odom get healthy. Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony are going to play better together. And if you win, you could face Phoenix (in the second round), who is the one team Houston can't beat. The uptempo game makes Yao useless and Houston isn't disciplined enough to keep the tempo slow. I'd rather face the Jazz.
-- Stephen, Baton Rouge

-- Stephen, Baton Rouge

Yes, I agree that the Rockets matchup with some teams better than others. But would the Rockets be wise to remain a fourth seed even if they've got a chance to move up another spot in the West? Sorry, I can't agree with that argument.

The bottom line is that the Rockets are going to have to beat some good teams to win a championship. If you're trying to avoid teams like the Phoenix Suns or even Los Angeles Lakers in certain rounds of the postseason, then you're probably not going to get very far.

Personally, I'm convinced the Rockets should try to gain home court advantage over as many teams as possible. Sure, it probably won't make a difference in the second round if both the Mavericks and Suns advance. But if the Rockets get past those first two rounds, they could obviously end up facing San Antonio in the Western Conference Finals. If that's a possibility, is it really that smart to avoid moving ahead of them in the standings? And yes, I'm aware the Rockets won in San Antonio twice this season.

And by the way, I don't think the Rockets would consider themselves lucky if they drew the Utah Jazz in the opening round of the playoffs and managed to get a second round matchup with the Dallas Mavericks. But that's me.

Why is it so difficult for Jeff Van Gundy to play Bonzi Wells for 10 minutes a game?
-- Amish Karani, Houston

-- Amish Karani, Houston

Bonzi Wells actually doesn't even have a gripe over this. He'd obviously prefer to be playing, but he hasn't managed to cement his place in the Rockets' rotation at this point in the season. Rather than force Wells into the lineup, Van Gundy has left him on the inactive list.

Could Van Gundy keep him active and maybe find him 10 minutes per game? Of course. But Van Gundy would have to cut someone else's minutes to accomplish that and, since the beginning of the season, Wells has maintained that he's not much interested in being a guy that plays limited minutes. As long as the Rockets aren't playing him for 20 to 25 minutes per game, I think both the Rockets and Wells are fine with him being on the inactive list.

My question to you is will the Rockets secure and lock into a longer contract with Chuck Hayes. I had the privilege of coaching Chuck for a few years and he deserves to be on this roster for years to come. The kid brings intensity and energy, and over the last few games when he is starting with Yao, he provides the help that is needed (and putting up good numbers). Your thoughts?
-- Ray Leon

-- Ray Leon

I'd be surprised if Chuck Hayes wasn't back in a Houston uniform next season. I can't venture a guess on what sort of deal he might get, but the Rockets clearly recognize -- and love -- what Hayes brings to the team.

How could they not? He's an ideal fit as a rebounder and low-block defender next to Yao Ming. And he's pretty darn good at running the pick-and-roll with Tracy McGrady even though he's missed a few gimmes. Above all else, though, the Rockets love the energy that he brings every night.

Now, if they can just get him to stay out of foul trouble ...

Are the Rockets trying to get Steve Francis back?
-- Ricardo Umerez

--
Ricardo Umerez

Here's the thing, Ricardo. Steve Francis isn't exactly available.

The NBA trading deadline passed long ago and the former Rockets guard is still a member of the New York Knicks. I know, I know. Those rumors about Francis being potentially bought out won't go away. But I seriously doubt the Knicks are going to cut the guard loose while they're still chasing a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Trust me on this one: Francis isn't going to be a wearing Rockets uniform this season.

You may think I am crazy with my next proposal. However, hear me out until I've finished. In order for the Houston Rockets to win the NBA championship next year, I think that the following changes should made.

First, here's the big one. I think the Rockets should trade Yao Ming. A sin you may be thinking, however, you must look at it from the big picture. During Yao's absence, the Rockets went 21-10. Yao's offensive load was easily made up by Tracy McGrady's 29.9 points over January (plus 7.1 assists over that same period) and 27.2 points over February which McGrady is more than capable of getting 30 points plus and six assists without Yao. To further prove my point, Yao's rebounding of 9.6 was outweighed by Dikembe's 10.6 as a starter and we all know Deke can block! Hence, I believe a trade of Yao would be a positive step forward as we have shown we are able to compensate his scoring, rebounding and blocking. Also Yao's 3.76 turnovers are second in the league.

The second change I believe should be done is either trading Rafer Alston or having him on the bench. Luther Head definitely needs to be at starting point. As a starter, Head already can average more points and just as much assists.
--
Pamapuria

-- Pamapuria

You were right in the beginning, Pamapuria. I think you're crazy.

Sorry, I can't see trading arguably the most dominant center in the NBA. Yes, I agree the Rockets played well without Yao and that the center has some areas for improvement. Well, really he has one area of improvement -- trimming his turnovers. But really, I don't think there is any plausible scenario where you give away a dominating big man because you have other guys that are doing fine. I don't see how you can scoff at 24.7 points and 9.5 rebounds. And, I might add that the Rockets never really replaced his interior scoring when he was out. McGrady's numbers did go up, but he didn't make up for 24-plus points every night in the paint.

As for benching Rafer Alston for Luther Head, I'm not sure that's a wise move. Head, by his own account, is a shooting guard and doesn't possess the point guard skills of Alston. And I'll say it again, Alston doesn't get enough credit for running the offense.

Next thing you know, someone is going to tell me that the Rockets should trade Tracy McGrady.

Mail Time: Can the Rockets catch anyone out West?

Rockets.com's Damien Pierce opens his mailbag to answer fans' questions

Damien Pierce
Rockets.com Staff Writer

Rockets.com beat writer Damien Pierce opens up his mailbag each week to answer fans' questions.

So ask Pierce anything about the NBA or the Rockets. He’ll come up with an answer or an answer that sounds right. His answers, of course, are entirely his own opinion.

Guess what is on everyone's mind this week? With the playoffs about a month away, fans want to know if the Rockets can catch the Spurs and Jazz in the Western Conference standings.

Pierce will be fielding questions again on March 23, so send in your queries.

Do the Rockets have any chance of catching the San Antonio Spurs or Utah Jazz in the Western Conference?
-- Dave Marshall, Houston

-- Dave Marshall, Houston

The Rockets certainly have time to catch the San Antonio Spurs with 17 games remaining on their schedule, but it won't be easy.

San Antonio is (surprise, surprise) suddenly playing great basketball with the playoffs right around the corner. Manu Ginobili has been unstoppable for about two weeks and Tim Duncan is dominating again. The Spurs are riding a 13-game winning streak and have a comfy 6 1/2 game cushion over the Rockets.

With that said, I think the Rockets are more concerned with trying to catch Utah. Really since January, Houston has been pushing for home-court advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Jazz are leading the Rockets by 3 1/2 games, but Houston appears to have a more favorable closing schedule. Utah is playing nine clubs that are at least .500 over the final month of the season, while the Rockets are only playing six teams with winning records over that span.

The Rockets also get two shots at the Jazz over the next 17 games. Win those and Game 1 could be in Toyota Center.

Who grades the referees and who determines which referees will officiate in the NBA Finals?
-- Glenn Garig, Magnolia

--
Glenn Garig, Magnolia

Stu Jackson, the NBA's Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, is in charge of supervising officials. He's got a six-man team that analyzes how the men in stripes are performing.

NBA 부회장(the NBA's Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations), 스투 잭슨이 심판진을 관리하는 업무를 담당하고 있습니다.

Beyond that group, the league has standard observers at each game. The observers grade calls, analyze each official, see how the referees are working together as a group and report to the league's Director of Officiating and the Director of Performance Analysis. The league's coaches and general managers also have some input by reporting to the league how they think officials are doing.

그리고 리그 심판 업무 관리자?(the league's Director of Officiating)와 실행 분석 관리자?(the Director of Performance Analysis)에게 보고합니다.

The zebras -- although I guess they don't wear stripes in the NBA -- that get high performance scores are selected to officiate the playoffs and eventually the NBA Finals. Usually, the referees hand-picked for that highest honor are fairly tenured.

Rafer Alston is always left open by other teams because of his shooting. What's it going to take for him to improve? Why does Jeff Van Gundy not allow Vassilis Spanoulis to play for five to 10 minutes when Rafer is having a bad game?
-- Amish Karani, Houston

-- Amish Karani, Houston

I'm surprised that we've managed to go over a month in the Mailbag without a more significant push in the Bench-Rafer-for-another-point-guard campaign.

Alston might not be burying jumpers with a high frequency, but it's unfair to judge whether the point guard is having a good or bad game based on his shooting numbers alone. The ball moves around the perimeter better when Alston is on the floor. He might not always be the guy that's getting an assist on a play, but he's often the guy that makes the pass before the pass that found an open man. That, to me, is really his most important asset. Are the Rockets at their best when he's at point guard? Yes. If he's running the offense effectively and efficiently, then he's having a positive impact even on those nights when his jumper isn't dropping.

Alston rarely gets credit on the nights when he's hitting. Did anyone notice that he was 7-of-10 against the Clippers on Wednesday? But overall, the Rockets would certainly benefit if Alston was sinking at a higher rate than 36.9 percent. He could improve his overall numbers by driving a little bit more because he takes a ton of three-point shots, but then he would be passing on the look that he's already being given. Alston's adjusted field goal percentage is actually a respectable 46 percent when the number of three's he's taking are factored in.

But at some point, Alston deserves credit for getting the rest of the team in a flow. The Rockets don't quite click as good when he's not on the floor.

Why is Shane Battier in the starting lineup even though he does not put big numbers?
-- Alex Yulo, Houston

-- Alex Yulo, Houston

Now, this one shocks me. Shane Battier certainly doesn't put up arcade numbers. But is he really that hard to notice on a basketball court?

Here's a hint of what to look for: He's usually the guy chasing the other team's All-Star all over the hardwood, picking up someone else's man with his superb help defense, diving for a loose ball out of bounds to get the Rockets an extra possession or, on occassion, cooly stroking a three-pointer from the corner.

Once you see all that, you'll have your answer on why he's a starter.

Will the Rockets have a nine-man rotation when Bonzi Wells returns from his foot injury?
-- Robert Jones, Houston

-- Robert Jones, Houston

Bonzi Wells could be a difference maker in the playoffs if he's healthy and productive. But he's running out of time to solidify his spot in the rotation.

Before Wednesday's game against the Clippers, Jeff Van Gundy said he's going to play at least eight guys over the remainder of the regular season and playoffs. No, he wasn't already excluding Bonzi (or even Kirk Snyder). He was merely pointing out that eight guys are for sure going to get minutes as the season unravels. He left the door open for someone else to get into the mix, but the coach is obviously looking to tighten his rotation more than expand it at this point in the season.

Wells could work his way back in. But he isn't guaranteed playing time because he's been in and out of the lineup. The swingman has missed eight straight games with a sore left foot. For those keeping track at home, he's now missed 49 games this season.

Since Wells was a bona-fide Spurs killer during last year's postseason and he gives the Rockets a slashing scoring threat, my hunch is that he will eventually expand Van Gundy's rotation to nine. But he's certainly going to have to be on the floor over much of the final month of the season if that's going to happen.

Mail Time: Should Bonzi be utilized more?

Rockets.com's Damien Pierce opens his mailbag to answer fans' questions

Damien Pierce
Rockets.com Staff Writer

Rockets.com beat writer Damien Pierce opens up his mailbag each week to answer fans' questions.

So ask Pierce anything about the NBA or the Rockets. He’ll come up with an answer or an answer that sounds right. His answers, of course, are entirely his own opinion.

In this week's mailbag, fans want to chat about Bonzi Wells' playing time, the NBA's study on flopping and whether the Rockets should consider trading Tracy McGrady.

Pierce will be fielding questions again on Feb. 2, so send in your queries.

Why is Bonzi Wells not being utilized more? He practically carried the Kings through the playoffs last year and could be a huge asset to our "not-so-deep" bench. It seems like we're wasting his talent by making him watch the game from the bench. Is this strictly because of injury, conditioning, or talent?
--
Josh, Huntsville, Tex.

-- Josh, Huntsville, Tex.

Bonzi Wells hasn't exactly been around the whole season to be utilized more. The Rockets guard has only played in 15 games this season and in only three since returning from a back injury. Sorry Josh, but I don't think you can say the Rockets haven't utilized a guy that hasn't really been available.

With that said, Bonzi's role appears to be on the rise. He has played at least 17 minutes in the past four games, including a 24-minute effort on Friday night, and has found a spot in the rotation as Tracy McGrady's primary backup. He is typically starting the second and fourth quarters.

I do think the Rockets need to call his number more often on the offensive end. Wells is a matchup nightmare against opposing guards because of his ability to post up and could certainly take some of the scoring burden off McGrady. He has also shown that he can be an effective rebounder on the offensive glass.

If Wells is consistently productive on the offensive end and brings good energy off the bench, his talent is certainly worth seeing at least 25 minutes per night. I believe the Rockets want to utilize him as their sixth man, but he just hasn't been available enough this season to secure that role. Hopefully, his 14 points and seven rebounds on Friday night are a sign that that's about to change.

Do you think the NBA should penalize players for flopping?
-- Luke Smith, Houston

-- Luke Smith, Houston

Absolutely. The NBA has been saturated with guys pretending like they've just taken a punch from Muhammad Ali after barely being nudged. And, frankly, I'm not sure how that's good basketball. Great acting, no question. But I don't think James Naismith had flailing 7-footers in mind when he created the game.

That's why it's good to hear that the NBA is considering making flopping illegal in the NBA. The league is bouncing around the idea of giving technicals for the manuever, but they are still in the process of studying the situation. The challenge, of course, is figuring how effective referees are in determining the difference between an actual foul and a flop.

The good news for NBA fans? I don't think it will be too hard to figure out.

Should the Rockets consider trading Tracy McGrady since he's had so many back problems?
-- Danny Nguyen

--
Danny Nguyen

Are you kidding or did I just miss the punch line in your e-mail?

Tracy McGrady has certainly had his share of back problems over the past two seasons, but I can't imagine trading one of the NBA's few unstoppable players. How many guys are there in the league that can score 40 points on any given night? The list, I assure you, isn't as long as you might think.

McGrady's importance, however, goes beyond his scoring. With his ability to cut to the basket and draw double teams, he creates open looks for everyone else on the floor. McGrady might not be a point guard, but he makes decisions like one.

Really, though, the most important number is the Rockets' record when McGrady isn't on the floor. Houston is just 2-6 this season when the star is out of the lineup.

How do you trade away a guy that is that important to the team?

Do you think the Rockets should try to aquire Nazr Mohammed from the Detroit Pistons?

-- Mark Hopper

-- Mark Hopper

The Pistons are reportedly interested in dealing Nazr Mohammed and the Rockets could certainly use quality help in the front court with Yao Ming expected to be out until March. But Mohammed's sizable contract would make him a tough fit in Houston. He reportedly has three years and $18 million remaining on his contract after this season. That means it would take some creative math for Mohammed to somehow end up in town.

Why does Steve Novak never get to play? Defense is very important, but if the shooters keep tossing up bricks all game, what could it hurt to play him? I saw him in a three-point shooting contest one year and that guy can just flat-out shoot.
-- Ken Sirman

--
Ken Sirman

Sorry, Ken, I only answer questions about Vassilis Spanoulis' lack of playing time in the mailbag. Just kidding.

Steve Novak could probably win the three-point shooting contest at the NBA's All-Star Weekend, but the Rockets aren't in dire need of more long-distance shooting.

Houston is fifth in the NBA in three-point percentage at a 36.9 percent clip and the lineup is filled with plenty of quality spot-up shooters in Luther Head, Tracy McGrady and Rafer Alston. You could make the case -- and get little argument here -- that Novak is a higher percentage shooter from beyond the arc than any of those players. But, unlike the other guys, the rookie doesn't contribute much beyond his shooting.

With Yao Ming out, the Rockets need defensive help and rebounding from their forwards and that's not Novak's game at the moment. He'll improve in those facets as his career progresses, but I wouldn't expect him to play a ton of minutes in the second half of the season. He's got to be more than a shooter to crack Jeff Van Gundy's rotation.
