So ask Pierce anything about the NBA or the Rockets. He’ll come up with an answer or an answer that sounds right. His answers, of course, are entirely his own opinion.

In this week's mailbag, fans want to know if they should be worried about Tracy McGrady's latest back injury, how Dikembe Mutombo's playing time will be altered when Yao Ming returns and what the latest is on Yao's rehab.

McGrady is confident he'll play Saturday against the Denver Nuggets after missing Wednesday's game with a stiff lower back and he said that his latest back problem is "nothing major." He pointed out that he isn't experiencing spasms, but does have some stiffness in his back after going up for a dunk against the Mavericks on Tuesday night.

With that said, the Rockets star is obviously day-to-day for remainder of the season. He has been dealing with different back issues for some time and there is certainly no telling when his back problems might flare up.

e good news is that his latest injury probably won't keep him out seven games like the spasms that he had back in December.

티맥으로서는 야오가 나가떨어진 이후에 포기하는게 쉬운 일이었을 지도 모른다. 암튼 이번 시즌 건강한 로켓츠는 서부 컨퍼런스의 대권에 도전하기 충분했을것이다. 지금 로켓츠는 플레이오프를 위해,그리고 팀이 가라안지 않기 위해 노력중이다.

티맥을 좀더 좌절스럽게 만드는 사실은 아직 커리어 동안 플레이오프 시리즈에서 이기지 못했다는 것이다. 로켓츠는 2005년 매브스를 상대로 시리즈를 2-0으로 앞서고 있었지만, 결국 댈러스에서의 7번째 게임까지 가서 116-76으로 패하였다. 티맥은 홈-코트 어드밴티지가 얼마나 중요한 지에 대해

Notes: McGrady might return against Indiana

Rockets guard improving  from back injury; Head sets new franchise mark

 

Rockets guard Tracy McGrady might return to the lineup on Tuesday against the Pacers.

HOUSTON -- Tracy McGrady might be back in the Rockets' lineup tonight against the Indiana Pacers.

The Rockets swingman, who has missed the past seven games because of back spasms, could be cleared to play depending on how he feels following the team's shootaround.

McGrady has been practicing with the team since Saturday and hasn't had any setbacks.

Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said before Saturday's game that his team would simply insert McGrady into the lineup when he is ready.

McGrady would certainly provide the Rockets with a boost after losing Yao Ming. Houston is 2-5 this season without McGrady and struggled last season when Yao and McGrady were out.

The Mailbag's readers are unsurprisingly in a state of panic since Tracy McGrady has been sidelined with his back spasms.

I understand the fuss (especially considering Houston's record without him so far), but I still believe the Rockets can reach the playoffs if their star swingman is in and out of the lineup this season with back problems.

That's vital for a team that is already filled with spot-up shooters and is missing a slasher in Kirk Snyder. Wells has also shown with past teams that he is more than capable of shouldering an offense and could be that guy once he gets more adjusted to the team.

The Rockets have sorely missed McGrady's ballhandling and playmaking over the past five games, but Houston has time to figure out how to be more efficient since the star forward is out indefinitely. They've also got to play better on the road, especially against Western Conference foes.

The Nuggets are certainly a threat in the Western Conference.

The addition of Allen Iverson clearly gives the Nuggets hope of competing in the West and making a deep postseason run, but the big question around the league is whether or not Carmelo Anthony and Iverson can coexist in the same lineup.

My guess is that Anthony and Iverson will find enough shots in Denver's uptempo game. But conference title contenders? That might be stretch. The Nuggets have to be considered a probable playoff team and I don't think too many teams will be lining up for a shot against A.I. and Melo in the playoffs. But overall, I don't think Denver has the front line to compete with same of the top teams out West.

Why not? Since the NBA wants to continue building interest across the globe and the in flux of foreign-born talent in the league has increased substantially over the past decade, it would make sense to take the All-Star Game overseas.

Luther Head, who has made a three-pointer in his 24th consecutive game Wednesday night to establish a new team record, could certainly develop into an All-Star just like any other second-year player in the league. It would be silly to limit his potential at this stage in his career.

The Rockets indeed entered Thursday's action 22nd in the league in scoring at 95.1 points per game, but Houston was never going to challenge the Phoenix Suns or Denver Nuggets as one of the league's highest scoring teams.
