So ask Pierce anything about the NBA or the Rockets. He’ll come up with an answer or an answer that sounds right. His answers, of course, are entirely his own opinion.

Do you think the Rockets can matchup well against the elite teams in the West like San Antonio, Dallas and Phoenix when they finish off the Jazz in the first round of the playoffs?

I don't really mind answering the recent run of how-do-the-Rockets-matchup-with-the-best-teams-in-the-West questions. Frankly, it beats responding to suggestions to trade Yao Ming. But what I’m struggling with are the implications that the Rockets are in for an easy opening round matchup with the Utah Jazz.

How exactly did anyone get this idea? The Jazz, last I checked, have been leading the Northwest Division from start to finish. They've got a bruising power forward in Carlos Boozer who has given the Rockets fits, Deron Williams is one of the league's rising talents at point guard and the Jazz are the NBA’s best rebounding team. And we're already talking about who the Rockets are going to face in the second round?

I could understand the logic that the Rockets are going to roll past the Jazz if Houston had dominated Utah in the regular season. But so far, the Rockets and Jazz have split two games. They haven't even won the regular season series.

Look, I think the Rockets have the potential to contend in the West. The speed and depth of the Mavericks and Suns presents obvious problems and the Spurs are loaded with playoff experience. But the Rockets create their own mismatches with Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming and their defense can frustrate any team in a seven-game series.

But if the Rockets draw the Jazz in the first round, I don't think it's reason to pencil them into the next round. I'd expect a physical series that most certainly isn't going to be done in four or five games.

The Rockets need to get to the free throw line more and limit their turnovers with Yao Ming back in the lineup.

But, assuming they draw the Jazz in the first round, they've got to consistently get on the boards. Despite being among the league’s leading rebounding teams, the Rockets haven’t consistently dominated the glass of late. They won't advance if they can’t limit Utah’s second-chance points.

The Jazz lead the league in rebounding differential at plus-5.16 and have overwhelmed opponents with their ability to get second-chance shots. They’re a gritty team that thrives on pounding the glass. The Rockets can't let them do it if they expect to advance.

Since the Rockets will play the Jazz for sure in the playoffs, shouldn't Luther Head should be in the starting lineup to defend Deron Williams? He's an All-Star for sure and no one knows his style of play better than Head because they were teamates in college, he can cause turnovers and help the Rockets get past the first round?

I'm not sure Luther Head would be the Rockets' best option to defend Deron Williams. Head might be able to offer Rafer Alston some tips on defending Williams heading into a playoff series, but Head's strength isn’t his perimeter defense. He earns his minutes because he’s the Rockets' top three-point shooter..

Why is it that McGrady's offensive efficiency has severely gone down since the return of Yao? It seems to have reverted to his performances before Yao's injury earlier this year. Does Yao's presence somewhat clog the lane or is that of no relevance?

I'm not sure we're watching the same game, Isaac. McGrady is certainly taking fewer shots with Yao back in the lineup, but he’s still a pretty darn efficient player on the offensive end.

Check out the numbers. Heading into Friday’s game against the Lakers, McGrady was averaging 23.6 points, 6.0 assists and 2.5 turnovers since Yao returned from his fractured right tibia. The scoring numbers have taken a slight dip, but that’s to be expected with Yao back on the floor.

Well, I wouldn't hold your breath. The NBA isn't going to overhaul the playoff format because the league prefers its traditional approach and – in all honesty – the system hasn't proven to be broken.

Unless one conference goes on an unheard of championship run that shows the league's balance of power is out of whack, I wouldn’t expect the NBA to consider any changes.
